I don't know where to go with this so I'll try here. I just went through some fairly old jewelry that I had stuck away in a drawer. (Like forever) Well some of it looks pretty good but I'm wondering if anyone has a homemade jewelry cleaning recipe. This jewelry is not anything expensive but some of it was my Mom's and I'd like to wear some of it again. It's just mostly costume jewelry. Just wanted to know if there is anything that would make them sparkle a little again. Thanks for any help you can give me.

I use a mild solution of mr clean and water, a soft toothbrush to get in crevices,
and for stubborn dirt, I've even swished the pieces in mr clean undiluted for a minute or so then brushed them under running warm water.

I find that the solution they sell to clean jewellery is pretty harsh.

Mitch, I never thought to use Mr. Clean, but here is what the jewelers told me. They almost all use Shout or some other pre-stain treatment, soak the jewelry and then use an electric cleaner (you can use an electric toothbrush) with a soft brush on it. My jewelry, costume or not, shines and even smells pretty! Spend as much time as you can in the crevices.

Thanks everyone. For most things it looks like I can use simple household cleaners that I have on hand. However I have a diamond cut gold & silver necklace and several intricate silver mesh necklaces and a silver cloth only takes care of the top surface. When I finish wiping the surface I can see tarnish in the crevices. I will try the dawn dishwashing soap or Jannie's solution. I was rather hoping for a little less elbow grease since I have a fair number of pieces to do but perhaps this is the safest. I will let you know how it works.

There is more to this lady's lamenting than not wanting to change her grand's diaper. The child is not being taught many things and is no fun to be around. Enough of this sentimental stuff. This lady is being handed a big guilt trip. I'll bet she stopped reading these posts. As for the lady in the church thingy. I know her kind. I'll bet lots of us do. She's a wonderful person and judgemental too. She needs help in the nursery--but no one wants to be in there. Those are the sweet, sweet, wonderful church ladies. Gag me. Give me a break with all those wonderful stay-at-home mom's and all of their saintly accomplishments. Right! I'll take a lady with dishes in the sink, and a 'to-do' list that hangs around forever, has fruit gnats hanging out in her kitchen, a sprinkler hose flooding the whole back yard, not a cute outfit to her name, and the little ones telling her, 'granma, if you were my age you would be my best friend' and 'can I have some more pancakes?' This lady needs to resolve how she is going to adapt herself to the fact that her children don't think like she thinks.

My vote would be, maybe it's time to rethink whether you're willing to sort into hampers once you get stuff downstairs. Bcs I think that's what I'd do in your situation: one hamper per closet, so as not to take up so much space; and sort when you get downstairs. Sorting never bothered me; it would give me a chance to empty pockets, pretreat stains, turn jeans inside out, be sure knits etc., are in net bags so I don't forget to dry them, etc. It would just perhaps change the time that I do them, bcs I wouldn't need to do them right before I put them in the washer (which I'd have to do if I sorted in my closet) Then tossing a load in the wash would be fast--grab, stuff, start. It would also give me the opportunity to preSOAK stuff in OxyClean before I ran the load. Of course, I'd have to remind myself to take the laundry down more regularly.

My main concern (which I stated in my original post) is that the jewelry (especially rings) will tear the dough and therefore not be practical - mixing meatloaf while wearing rings is a different story and merely requires a bit more washing up afterwards. But I also do not like to see people getting nice clothes dirty, when it is so easy to put on an apron to protect them. I put on aprons to protect even the most casual clothes that I wear when cooking, but then I particularly like aprons. I've tried wearing gloves and just feel clumsy when I do. When chopping hot chilies (and I frequently chop Habanero and Scotch Bonnet chilies), I pour olive oil on the fingers of my left hand, which I use to hold the chilies, and then I wash that hand with a lot of soap after putting the chilies into the recipe. If I am making hot sauce and will be using a lot of chilies, then I will wear gloves - and also a swim mask and snorkel, to avoid breathing the fumes and also turn on the vent or a fan to blow the fumes out of a window. Since my stove vent only recirculates air, I'm not sure how good it would be at removing chili fumes.

I have accidentally washed costume jewelry left in a pocket, and I am always amazed at how it sparkles afterwards. I would use hot water and some shampoo in a bowl. Swish the jewelry around, let it sit a bit, swish it again, rinse and pat dry on a terry towel. Don't wash too many things together so that they won't snag and scratch each other. Hot water and laundry detergent or shampoo does it.

Don't attempt to clean jewelry with pearls or if the stones/beads appear to have been glued. They might be ruined by any rough treatment or even plain water. However, if it's just "dirt" from natural skin oils and dust, you can soak jewelry in a 50-50 mixture of water, dish soap like Dawn and a splash of ammonia. Soak a few hours to overnight, rinse well and dry with a soft cloth.
