Building a Home

House Update 3/31/05

Things are moving along at the site. The plumbing is pretty much completely roughed-in and the HVAC guys are working on the ductwork. The fireplace has been installed and the framers are working on the roof and house trim. The brick was delivered today and is sitting on the property. Things are coming along nicely. I do have some concerns, tho. Right now I am worried that my washer and dryer won't fit into the space alotted for them in the laundry room, and then I don't know what I will be doing. But we'll get to that bridge... Also, I am annoyed that the ductwork will take about a foot section out of my closet...where I had planned on putting my vanity table. Of course this ductwork box out wasn't on the floorplans, so we had an electrical outlet installed right there for the vanity. It was going to be a tight fit to begin with but now I don't think it will fit at all. I need to take a tape measure with me next time I go to the house.

In other news, we had a showing today on the current house. Amusingly, it was a drive-by, so they gave us like 1 minute notice. The house was messy, with dishes on the counter and stuff, but clean. They were an older couple, and I don't think this is the house for them. I will call my realtor and get feedback (if there is any) tomorrow. Hopefully this weekend we will have more showings.

Should I not be posting these here? Should I post them in the discussions section? Or do you mean I should continue posting in one thread? I think I understand, sorry :/

I hope you have a fit at everyone else who posts in the Gallery who isn't supposed to so I don't feel like I am getting special treatment ;)

Hi Bing, This year I am trialing 2 different fertilizers: Tomato-tone, and Fox Farms. I am doing A/B comparisons with one strip in side "A" and the other strip in side "B". I have a mechanical barrier between the two plants, so there should be good isolation for the experiments. Regarding the potting mix "recycling", at the end of the season when I pull the old plants, I intend to add about 1/3 new potting mix, and stir it in. I will do this yearly, and use the mix contained in the root ball elsewhere in the yard. So with the 3 cubic ft. container, I will replace about 1 cubic ft. per season. As to BER, while it is very early in the season here in Northern California, I have not seen any signs of BER yet. Remember, I mixed in 2 cups of Dolomite Lime in the top 4" of the potting mix, and that is intended to minimize BER from developing. I got my seeds December 13 but I was in a self-imposed exile from the boards at the time (mandated extra hours of work, and GardenWeb forum browsing is a real time-sponge for me :-]), so although I did email Sue that I received them, now that I am done with work I wanted to post my heartfelt thanks to all who checked my list and their stashes for matches, and particularly shimla, poisondartfrog, remy, etravia, flowergardenlady, linda0210, and kandituft who have reduced my wish list, and especially susiek who not only helped reduce my wish list but hosted this great swap and restored my faith in big swaps :-). Getting that package in the mail was a big mood-lifter! I have ramped up milk jug collecting (planning a trip to the recycling center to swipe some from there) and bought 200 pounds of soil from Wal-Mart. Thanks again to everybody. Bucky, IMO, the best thing you can do is to keep the coolant at maximum full level at all times. It has been my experience that when Dexcool gets low and mixes with air for an extended period of time, it becomes really nasty and gunky. Also, although the extended coolants are suppose to go 100,000+ miles, I think you would be best served to flush and refill the system a little more frequently than that. Some of the intake manifold bolts are easier to access than others. I do not advise retorquing retorquing the easy bolts and not the others as this may actually put more uneven pressure on the gasket and potentially cause a leak. I do not see any benefits in spending the time and/or money to simply retorque the intake manifold bolts because of accessability issues. Once you get to them you might as well take the few additional steps (removing valve covers, rocker arms, pushrods, intake, etc.) and go ahead and replace the gaskets.

Gretchen, I am all about eating within my points! Actually, the whole grain stuff is much lower in calories, so it pays to eat whole wheat pasta (3 points per cup) than the white stuff (4 points per cup). I tried to do it within the context of SS, but I get to eat more and be more flexible here. Most veggies are 0 points per cup (including raw carrots!), so I bring at least 2 cups of veggies with me to work each day....grape tomatoes and celery sticks, or cucumber slices and baby carrots...you get the picture. Most fruit is 1 point per serving. I think that you personally would probably be able to eat at least 20 points per day (goes by present weight and gradually goes down as you lose in order to lose more), so you see how great it is to fill up on veggies! They give you 35 flex points per week to use all at once, or spread out---however you need them. There is a website that gives you the points of most foods. Here is my day of eating (note that I like to eat all day, so I spread out my food intake...no set rules at Weight Watchers...they say "you can eat anything, just not EVERYTHING" LOL): 8 am: 1 cup Kashi cereal (dry) with my decaf coffee 10 am: 6 oz Dannon Fit and Light Yogurt Noon: 1 sandwich w/ low fat ham, ff cheese, mustard and "diet bread" (2 slices = 1 point); pickle, 1 cup of cherry tomatoes 2:00pm 10 baby carrots 4:00pm 1 pear 5:00pm exercise class (you can get back 2-3 points for this!!) 7:00pm 1 salad w/ oil vinegar, 1 large portion of fish (7 oz), asparagus, 1 cup of rice 9:00pm 1 point sugar-free Edy's all fruit ice pop I may still have points left, because I haven't done the math for my dinner here. I've listed approximations here...I would only use 1 tablespoon of olive oil for a 3-point salad, etc. You will get used to the measurements. Anyway, I hope this helps you. I've eaten pizza, ice cream, lasaagna, and still lost weight...you just need to count the points and plan the rest of your day/week accordingly! Here is a link that might be useful: WW Points

Annie, it's a Kohler ProFlex, Model K-1149. It is a 6' soaking tub, but it also comes as a whirlpool. As a soaker only, it is one of Kohler's less expensive models, retailing for $709. I liked it because of the arm rests and the fact that it looks like the sides are sloped enough to be comfy to relax in.

Nice home, Meig. It seems to be moving pretty quickly. Unlike me, you must be able to make some decisions to keep things rolling along.

I'm sure Jason was kidding since the original post on this thread from Feb. is still here. Just out of curiosity, How many pages of threads do we get in this area and how many threads will fit on a page? Seems like this photo gallery is pretty dead. I did think that this would be a good place for each forum member to post their own thread to keep adding their progress pictures. In other words, we could each post one thread and when you have updated pics, just add to your current thread. That would leave lots of room to continue adding new pics without bumping anyone off.

We also can always bump the more important stuff if it is in danger of falling off. That leaves the less popular threads to be at the bottom. Rescue the ones you love, guys and all will still be well with the world.

Ummmmm, I strongly suspect - WAIT - I am absolutely 100% sure that Jason was just kidding! I think he was being sarcastic (but not to you) about there only being a few posts in the Gallery! Notice how he posted it and then hasn't been back?! Kindof like the little boys in grade school who would pull a girl's pony tail and then run!

Here's the pics for today. They drywallers have started so it is finally coming together. I have gotten so used to seeing just the framing that it was weird to see actual walls :)

Here is looking up the stairs. Going to have a lot of wall to decorate for that landing.

The boys' bathroom. I wish I had put a window in there like I wanted to, but oh well. Too late now. I was impressed that the builder actually used greenboard. I know they didn't in our current house.

The front of the house as of today. The garage floor has been poured, too. I imagine the doors will be going on soonish. you can see the little strip of brickless area between the two bays that is giving DH such grief, too.

Drywall is in and the taping and mudding is in progress. It's really cool to see the actual way the house will look now since the walls are there.
