Showdown Miele Wall Oven vs Miele Speed Oven

For years I've been wanting to have double ovens. The last time I had double ovens they were so old that they only had one rack apiece and I couldn't find replacement racks. So in figuring out what I wanted in my kitchen, I decided on the 30" Miele wall ovens (based on lots of advice here).

Last week, I was in Los Angeles and visited the Miele showroom in Beverly Hills. I brought a sheet pan to put in the double oven to check the size since I use sheet pans all the time. The sheet pan had room to spare. Then sales guy asked me why I wanted two ovens and I said, well, when I want to cook several things at two different temperatures. That happens to me about once or twice a month. It may happen more often when I finally have my new kitchen. So he said that I should really check out the Speed Oven. I said that I'm not in a hurry. I'm retired. Why would I care about speed? And it looked small. Then he suggested that I put in my sheet pan. It fit perfectly on the rack. And there was room enough for 3 sheet pans. You couldn't put a roast in or a several breads, but I could do cookies or bacon or one pie. It would probably heat up faster than the 30" and I don't really need the 30" space in two ovens. It also has a broiler and a microwave. No need to have my big old microwave take up counter space. But then I asked about The Price.

My heart fell. The regular Miele double ovens went up to $5899.00 today. The price for the Speed Oven with a 30" trim kit and a 30" oven is $7487. That is a difference of $1588.00. Gulp!

So for those of you who own the 30" oven and the speed oven...is it worth the price difference? Do I go back to my original plan or should I really consider the upgrade?

This is not a direct answer to your question but something you may want to think about. Do you use your regular microwave alot during meal preperation? I do, to heat leftovers, cook, etc. I hate washing pots and I don't like cooked food standing around while something else is in the process of being cooked.

I have an excellent convection microwave as my "second oven" which I can use to do almost everything I can do in my large oven. However, I came to realize that if I use my conv/micro wave as my primary oven to cook my main dish, then I can't use it as my microwave to warm the veggies, etc. at the same time. I often laugh when I think, "wow, this is great, I need another microwave". If you cook like me, you may want to consider this. Just a thought.

Your reply is just the kind of thing that I was looking forÂa new way of looking at the product. Thank you. However, it just doesn't apply to me. I hardly ever use my microwave. I use it to reheat coffee, reheat leftovers and cook polenta. I found a great polenta recipe once that you can make in a microwave. Other than that it just sits there.

First , let me be the FIRST to say, I do not claim to be a Kitchen Designer or Kitchen Architech, alto I did design our curved kitchen--soooo----keeping the "above" in mind, here are 2 things that would "bother me" about stacking a Miele Speed Oven over a wolf Oven. (1) The wolf seems to have a bluish to white display, whilst the Miele Speed Oven is definitely on the orange-reddish side. That would probably really bug me. (2) The Wolf Control panel-display is about the same width as the black & glass area of the door (IE appears as "full width"), whilst the Miele has that smaller window type display area. Again one being directly above the other probably would bug me a bit. As I said , there are far more talented ppl here (design-wise) so maybe they can chime in. To Me the Elux Speed Oven would be a far better match (Lookswise),It has the full width display/control area the display (when lit is blue) and only a white clock shows when the display disappears (if not used for a couple of mins). The Elux Speed oven does not broil and uses a turntable---not a problem for me, but of course , I can't answer for you. Fortunately, I have a relatively large pantry (vs. a much smaller kitchen). So when I got the Miele Speed oven, I just moved my old Sharp microwave and my ancient, beloved, toaster oven into the pantry. Now, about 8 months after the remodel, I still use the toaster oven for toast, having never even tried to toast in the Miele. And the pantry's microwave gets used to do something quick (like melt butter) while the Miele is pre-heating, or baking, or whatever. Though these things only happen occasionally, its been often enough that I haven't seen my way to tossing out either old oven. The drawback, of course, is that there are 5 ovens in my little kitchen/pantry area, which seems excessive. And I suppose the pantry has less counter space for canned beans or whatever... As for the Miele's combination mode, I've only begun to explore this by using it to reheat things like casseroles -- Alton Brown's "Cauliflower Say Cheese", last night. Master Chef expects me to know how much these things weigh, which is a struggle, but last night's guess turned out just fine. Oh yeah, if you select Defrost mode, the Miele speed oven will heat in the range of 75 to 125 degrees. This setting is useful for cooking "raw" foods at 104. I did think about a steam oven as well, but there really was no way to fit it in there.

1. If you search in the Appliances forum, you'll find a number of posts from one guy who has the Sharp, and sells them, and thinks they're terrific. 2. Lots have the Advantium (inc. me, but I have the Monogram Pro 240 version). Plenty of info about that, and the OTRs in the Appliance forum too. I love my Advantium. I'm not so enamored of speed cooking, but it's a truly excellent microwave, and works very well in oven mode. It works fine in speed mode as well, but I have yet to find things that I wouldn't rather spend the extra half hour on to do the old fashioned way. If I had X number of minutes to get the kids to practice, I'm sure the speed mode would be my best friend. 3. Yes, consensus is the Breville is the best toaster oven. More info about that in Appliances too. :) I have the Gaggenau combi-steam. The amount of steam escaping really isn't a big issue, though I suppose it might be if you had a uberairtight house, or high humidity. I'm not sure you need the toaster oven except for actually making toast, or a lot of family members all making different things at once. I have a conventional oven, combi-steam and Advantium, and keep a toaster oven in the small appliances drawer for toasting bagels, et al. When we take it out, we put it on the island, handy to the breakfast seating. I use one of the smaller ovens (both the Advantium and combi- do convection oven mode) if I need a small oven, never the toaster oven. Though the Breville is supposed to be a very good oven.

We have the Bosch set with speed oven on top, side door opening oven on bottom. I absolutely love both ovens! The side door opening makes cooking almost effortless. There is no awkward reaching or bending and this is from someone with two burn marks on my arm in almost the same place from using our old range! We did not get the double ovens because I felt we did not need the extra oven space plus we use the microwave a lot. Also have the large Breville toaster oven that can be used for extra oven space if needed. We considered Miele as their ovens are beautiful but this was pushing us way over budget so not an option. Good luck with decision, took us at least 6 months to figure out! Btw food comes out awesome in both ovens, obviously very important too.

My husband and I just celebrated our 31st wedding anniversary. One of our sayings is "the three most important words in a relationship aren't 'I love you', but 'you were right'." I realized after thinking about it that I do more with my microwave than I mentioned in my earlier post. I defrost frozen stocks, heat water to boiling, melt chocolate, get citrus a little more juicy before squeezing and I'm sure there is more. I would be really annoyed if I couldn't do those things because the oven was in use. I would be even more annoyed that I paid an extra $1600.00 for that. Thank you so much. You were right.

Carecooks, glad my thought helped you. There is so much redundancy in kitchen appliances today, so many bells and whistles available that beckon me like a box of chocolates. But as already mentioned, you really need to examine your style and patterns of cooking. I love to cook and bake, bought the Miele 30" oven, but still use the microwave constantly for all those quick heat-up, prep, and defrost chores.
