Do you have a signature look or style?

Today's paper had an interesting article which talked about creating a signature look or style as part of marketing yourself and making yourself stand out among the crowd (especially in the workplace). The author explains that she wears mostly black separates and unfussy styles. It would certainly make shopping and getting dressed in the morning easier wouldn't it? At any rate, I had to wonder how many of you have a signature look or style?

Cottage. I guess it's hard to define, but it's vernacular here. Basically, a single story small cottage with a mis-mash mix of older items. Most cottages here were owned by folks in a large city about 45 minutes away as vacation properties. They were built economically and maintained in the same manner. We have a bunch of mis-matched windows here. And I LOVE it. I can decorate with dumpster dive antiques showing wear and tear and they fit right in (like the cabinet in the left corner of the attached pic-grabbed it off the side of the road, cleaned it up and viola, dining room cabinet)! My stove and fridge are 1950's era. True cottages are becoming rare here, as people tear them down for larger "year round" homes (ours is a cottage, but we live here-lol). What molding do you have on craftsman/shaker style cabinets?

Thanks everyone! This is really helpful. There are some great ideas there. I wonder if any of these are Kraftmaid cabinets? Seems like maybe KM doesn't have that many molding options ... I'm hoping to construct something out of a combination of their molding and filler pieces. I just came across something called the "golden ratio" that I am now trying to incorporate into the design ... or am I overanalyzing this? ... perhaps this is just a symptom of being way too TKO! I'm sure my KD would be rolling his eyes!

I think it'll be fine, especially if you're careful about the finish. Your house is pretty much now, and so is the style kitchen you've pictured, and the wide arch. The word "transitional" is overworked, but generally fits anything that has past elements in today's design framework, and that's really what you have pictured. The word "Shaker" applies to the simple recessed panel, not the minimalist design philosophy here. The woods in your picture of the stairs are honey colored (medium golden brown) and in your kitchen drawing they're more spice (medium-dark orange brown). Since you're opening up your house rather than separating off the kitchen, I'd be more concerned with making the woods work together than the cabinet style (which by being so simple should go with anything). Just make sure you're happy with the choice you make! There's no point starting otherwise.

Our last kitchen was made in England, was inset with exposed hinges. It was the unfitted look - pieces looked like furniture. 1 stain color, 3 paint colors and 3 counter materials. The island, for example, came over as one piece and we added the antique pine counter. The hutches came over as two pieces. The ends are finished, so technically either could be used in the DR or breakfast room and stand alone. I had a walk-in pantry for food storage and small appliances. No food was stored in the kitchen (other than fridge/freezer). I did not miss any space by not having traditional uppers or inset cabinets. At the time, I had a hard time finding a local cabinetmaker that wasn't astronomical. It was less expensive to have made in England and shipped, and I got exactly what I wanted. Our new kitchen is another English style kitchen based on Humphrey Munson kitchens, but made locally (Alabama). It is the only door style this cabinetmaker does. Inset doors with hidden hinges. 1 paint color, 1 counter material. We only moved a month ago, and the walk through pantry hasn't been built out yet, but I still don't miss traditional uppers, the pantry wall stores all the food and the last door hides a few often used appliances on a counter with drawers below. I am opting to only build-out one wall of the walk-thru pantry, and store seldom used trays, large roasting pans and other items there. Good luck with your kitchen. LOL! I am the op and am at the age where I'm thinking that my "look" is comfortable bordering on bag lady as you've both mentioned. However I see women in their 50s or 60s who don't buy into the latest trends but still manage to look really put together and current. I don't want to put out lots of money, just refine things a bit. The signature look idea seemed like an intriguing place to start.

I just wear classic, basic styles. Khaki/black/navy pants with knit tops or sweater sets to work. Since I'm on my feet all day, I have to wear athletic shoes which look horrible, but what can I do? I have to choose between "cute" shoes and shoes which treat my feet right. I'm always on the lookout for one which does both.

When I get into more stylish things or garments with fussy details, I don't feel like myself.

socks12345, I'm the same way...so perhaps I DO have a signature. I find that anything with fussy patterns or prints get pushed aside and eventually go to Goodwill. I also like knit tops for their ability to "move" and even though button down shirts are supposedly "classic" they pull and bind and never stay tucked, so they too usually end up gone.

As for shoes, I like the Sears "I (heart) Comfort" and also Rockport. I also have a couple of pairs of Propet (from the Penney's catalog) which are walking shoes with a bit of style and also somehow found a pair of Kumfs on sale which are extremely comfortable for me, but unfortunately seem to be extremely expensive and I don't forsee getting more of this brand.

I think my difficulty is looking "polished" and "professional" in all the comfy knits and "sensible" shoes that I enjoy.

Cotton skirts, soft cotton shirts with flowy cap sleeves (I have beautiful floral tattoos covering my shoulders to the middle of my biceps and I want to share them with everyone) and ballet flats in all different colors, most with bows, from Old Navy. Old Navy is where I get a lot of my clothes from, and the Gap. Comfy is key!

I don't leave the house much actually, so my real style is cotton PJ pants, tee shirt, and a worn denim button up over it if I get cold. Oh, and the long, white Hooter Girl socks.
