Help! - darkened shower floor grout

Our issue is one of darkened grout lines at the edges of our shower floor tile in a newly remodeled bathroom.

After using the shower only twice, we've noticed a persistent darkening of the floor tile grout near the walls, even after many days following the last exposure to water. Some of the darkening dries out, but some does not.

Since we're in Massachusettts, the shower was constructed with a flat copper pan then sloped mud in the pan, followed by porcelain mosaic tile with TEC AccuColor Sanded Grout mixed with Boost stain additive.

Our tiler was recommended by Bill Vincent and has indicated that discoloration like this can be normal. Before we accept the work of the tiler, we'd like the opinions of others as to how concerned we should be. Will this lead to mold problems or otherwise compromise the integrity of the constructed project? If it is not acceptable, what are the remedies?

It still kills me that copper is considered the cadillac for pans in MA. I grew up in, and have worked in MA, so I'm plenty familiar with their methods. Some are so restrictive, some so lax, some so contradictory in nature.

It still comes down to the pan being flat, and any imperfections in the flatness can lead to birdbaths (ponding), especially in the folded corners of the pan.

While others will likely disagree, it's a failed installation in my world.

The irony is that the installation is legal, and while the worksmanship, materials, and methods can be impeccable, a mud bed that retains moisture can be problematic over time.

Some installations do need time to settle in. But if Bill recommended the guy, I figure your installer will give you a better analysis of what is occurring since he can put his eyes on the job, and he knows exactly how the floor and walls are detailed.

Persistant darkening of the grout is never a normal thing. The question is not that the edges are darkening, but why JUST the edges. I'm with Mongo. Flat bottom shower pans are known to cause problems, and yet, they're still the norm in Mass.. If your shower pan is holding water (i.e.-- not allowing water to get down the weepholes), it would cause the groutlines to darken, but then it would be MOST of the shower pan, not just a couple of small areas around the edges. Shoot me an email as to who it was. There are a couple that I recommend in the area.

The most common reason for cracked or flaking unsanded grout that I see is using unsanded grout in joints that are are too wide for unsanded grout. The second most common is the one Bill mentioned, mixing the grout too loosely. Too many guys do that, some get away with it, some don't. That can occur with either sanded or unsanded. Those two will normally result in cracks showing within a few days of installation, as they are drying cracks, caused by the grout shrinking as it gives up water in the curing/drying process. Cracks that show up later are usually structural, caused by the floor flexing, or as I've seen in a couple of situations, using mastic on floor tiles instead of thinset. Grout bags give a recommended amount of water to add per bag. But it's usually a partial bag mix, so that may not work well. I mix my grout a little thicker than most guys I've seen, but one thing I do is mix it a longer than most guys mix there grout, then I let it slake for the proper amount of time. The irony is that by mixing it longer, which happens to be for the recommended amount of time on the bag, you get a better mix. And the grout, when mixed to the proper consistency and mixed for the proper amount of time, spreads like buddah. There's no need to add extra water to loosen it up. Mongo

Clean the grout on your marble flooring regularly using a PH neutral detergent to keep it in good condition. Use a flat mop instead of a string mop since the latter tends to hold more dirty water and ends up pushing dirt and bacteria into the grout lines causing them to go black faster over time. Do not use any acid or alkaline based cleaners (this means most tile cleaners are out of the question) as they can etch the marble permanently and the only way this can be fixed is by refinishing it. Sealers are great for preventing the grout from going black as fast but will inevitably wear out over time so a professional clean and reseal is required at least once every year or so depending on the amount of foot traffic. We use a machine which applies a diluted cleaning solution under high pressure while vacuuming at the same time. @millworkman, you mean where shower glass meets shower floor there should be silicone caulking? I believe the GC mounted the glass directly (deeply?) into the grout. I remember asking another bathroom contractor about this and he said it's Old School but works. No? Here are more photos, two of master shower and two of my son's shower. Note the crack along the grout of master shower grout. GC said he'll come and fix once we let him (or anyone) into our home isolation. Thanks for chiming in! I was going to ask about this next. I think it looks beautiful and after a little while you won't even notice that it might be lighter than you expected. If you want to experiment with a sealer, I would recommend that you, or your tile pro, make a sample board with the same grout, let that dry, and then experiment with a sealer to see if you're happy with the results, rather than experimenting on your whole floor.

Was your issue with darkened grout at the edges of the shower floor resolved? What was the problem and the remedy?

We have a similar issue in our new construction all tile shower in a house that is 2 months old. Our GC has the subcontractors coming next week to investigate weep holes. We're looking for as much information as we can find in advance of their visit.
