Is this an Antique Doll steamer trunk?

I came across this sitting outside the recycle bin at my local transfer station so i said, why not. It is not large in size, but big enough for a doll and or doll clothes. I noticed brackets on the inside on the left hand side...maybe shelves went there? or drawers? Any info you can give me would be awesome. Thanks.

Yes!!!...I bought one and stripped it....took the paper out and lined it in fabric for my daughter for her Barbies....about 43 years ago.
I removed the major portion of the value.....the inside of yours is in wonderful shape!!! Don't mess it up!

Its not in GREAT shape, the Faux outside is worn and the inside is peeling in some spots. So what are the brackets for inside?

Lovely piece, and I think you're spot on with the age. I would also try to just revitalize the piece. Watco Rejuvenating Oil is a good cleaner/revitalizer. If you have deep grime, you should use 0000 steel wool (which is actually the only way I've ever used it). If you don't you can try just a cloth and see how it works. For the carved bits, a natural-bristle shoe brush gets into them. Or a museum restorer told me he took a natural-bristle paint brush and cut the bristles off short and used that. Sorry, he didn't say how short, but probably no longer than 1" or 1 1/2 inches, so they'd be stiff enough to do the job. Excellent point about the rags and fire. If I don't have many to dispose of, they go in my fireplace to dry out, but only if I can vacate the room for awhile. Sorry, Jem, I respectfully disagree -- I've seen too many antiques screwed up by refinishing jobs. If the OP is willing to put back the original finish (in this case probably shellac), it might be okay. But too many refinishers hit the stripped pieces with a modern finish and change the look entirely. And lots of non-provenanced, mass-produced antiques DO still have value, which is greater if the finish is original. It's gone down in recent years, but will eventually rebound, as tastes once again change. Even the not-so-antiques will be more valuable in good original finishes.

Love the first pattern, Jan. Yes, yes and yes. I am very drawn to old pieces. I only have a few "new" pieces and they have patina. Made to look old things. I only buy vintage or antique accessories. I use family things when/where I can. Mom has told me to come go through a few drawers - can't wait. It was confirmed by an astrologist that I have an "old soul." I think that's part of the reason, if not the reason, I am drawn to things with history. I'm a big toucher when shopping antiques. I love running my hand across the top of something or picking it up for closer inspection. I often wonder who owned items before me and what it has witnessed. Imagine my horror of being raised by a furniture store family! lol I started buying old pieces at 21yo and had a few older family things in my room as a teenager. The home I was born into was 50s Danish, but I loved visiting my 90yo next door neighbor's home and was fascinated by her antiques. We moved to an English Tudor when I was 10yo and it fit my decorating personality. I like English things, but don't try to decorate in English. Def. eclectic, to fit what I am drawn to and feel good around. I love the coolness of Swedish, but would never decorate my home that way. I need warm colors/items. Texture is a must. I'm a very visual person. Could never live in a modern home (I do enjoy seeing) but would not be comfortable in one on a daily basis. Touches of French are okay, but I'm not into ornate pieces from any style.

I'm with those who've suggested creating a dual-purpose room. It sounds like you would use the crafting/project space, so why not set up half the room (or at least a corner) with a work space for yourself, and find some (gently used) fitness equipment your husband wants? Then you could see how you end up using the room before devoting more space than necessary to one purpose or the other. When I'm ready for another area to have to clean and maintain (which won't be for at least a couple of years), we'll finish our basement. We have the floor plan roughly worked out, and one room will be a combined fitness and project room. Right now the fitness stuff is set up in a corner of the unfinished basement and only sees use on the coldest mornings of the year, or occasionally when the kids are playing down there and it's too hot to run outside. I'm not sure it will get much more use even when finished as I'd much rather be outside moving around, but it's nice to have during periods of extreme weather. My sewing machine is now in a corner of our bedroom that's not ideal, but better than having it shut up somewhere. Projects end up all over the house, spread out in the living room or dining room. There's a kids craft table spackled and ready to be sanded sitting in the middle of the living room as I type. I know I would use a project space if I had a designated one, but the thought of having to clean (and decorate!) the basement when I'm still working on the main floors is too much for me at the moment.

It's worn.....but don't mess with it!
HOWEVER....it's yours......and while I bought the one I had for maybe $2.50....stripped all the paper off, stained and varnished and glued fabric on the inside....and filled with barbie clothes and gave it to my daughter.....who loved it and used it.....and stored her Barbies in it....and then gave it to her daughter who also stored her Barbies in it...
Well where else could I have found something that would have served so well for so long for the $100 that a trunk like that may be worth?

The brackets are for ( I think) little drawers that fit inside.

It's a good thing....save a piece of the past...or convert it to something you will use....the choice is yours.

I do love preserving the past. I work at an Old Fashion General Store. Im the manager. And i recently started finding and buying vintage items for the store since we sell old & new items. I do not know if this piece has any value, i would hate to keep something that i wont use properly. Either way i had to save it from the junk yard. Also, judging by my photos what year would you say this is?

I think they are early 20th century....like pre 1920.

Fantastic! I might pat it down with a damp cloth, try and wash some grime away but ill keep it as is. Who knows maybe there is a market for this stuff. Thanks so much!

and they are asking over $125! May have to do some more digging. Odd that someone would just toss this away.
