How to get burnt plastic off of porcelain enamel oven interior

Hi,

We put one of those drip protector "thingy's" by mistake in our electrolux convection oven. We thought it should be ok and handle the temperature of the oven as it states this is what it's for but it didn't and it ended up melting a bit.

Unfortunately, it left some residue on the porcelain of the oven.

The instructions state to use ammonia soaked in a paper towel over the tough stain/dirt in the manual but this didn't work.

Any suggestions on how to get this residue off? I've scrubbed and scrubbed but it will not come off.

You probably won't be able to get it off - people have put aluminum foil on the bottom of their ovens only to find it melted on and it won't come off. Oven manuals usually give warnings these days about not putting things like this in the oven for exactly this reason.

I did something similar with the drip trays on my Monogram range top. Accidentally turned on the the grill and left it on for probably 24 hours. The heat eventually melted the shipping plastic (which had not yet been removed) and discolored the grill cover (gave it a golden/brassy hue). I had little luck with cream of tartar. More luck with very hot water and a razor blade.
I know you don't want to scratch the enamel interior of the oven.
Can you call Electrolux for a recommendation. They have been great on the phone whenever I have had issues.

My thought is to turn the oven on nice and high and let the plastic get soft. Then very carefully, wearing a silicone oven mitt, see it you can't wipe or scrape (with a plastic scraper) off the now softer plastic.

I bought a Wolf Range and immediately started having enamel issues on the range top and inside the ovens themselves. The first replacement was inside the warranty window in 2018. However, the registered repairmen also bent the hinges when replacing the cavity which was obviously my fault at $400. Recently I cooked a Tennessee Peach Pudding and it spilled over. When I wiped it out, the enamel came along with it. Deep crevices of glass have come away. The registered repair company, Bekins just left and quoted me $3400 to replace the cavity and I could take it up with Wolf if I wanted to complain. Also, 2 of the nobs are springing back to low on their own and not staying in possession. This replacement per Wolf requires that all valves be replaced. I don’t think I’ve ever spent so much money on such an inferior product in all my 60 years. I’m awaiting the call back from my complaint made today.

First thing to do is see if there is F&P/DCS service in your area. Next check out that service, Do they stock parts, ask for referrals. You are correct, not many reviews, I only found 2 positive ones, (on several different sites), but by the same posters. One had not had the oven long enough to make any determinations about its reliability. Some discussion of them on Chow Hound (around 2012) as I recall, and some service problems, some quality problems, racks become gummed up, etc. Well I gotta get off cmptr now, More "Shake and Bake". how to clean burnt pot?

I know I'm answering this one really late, but I have a huge soup pot that often burns stuff on the bottom depending what I am making. Ex. Chicken Corn Chowder, Spaghetti Sauce, Chicken and dumplings or as we call it Chicken Pot Pie... etc. Anyway, it's a given that making anything thick or heavy usually burns when it has to cook long. I don't get too crazy though over it. When I get everything put away, I rinse out what I can then sprinkle the whole bottom with Cream Of Tartar. I let it sit for about an hour or so. If it's really bad I also put water in the bottom and bring that to a boil. But before I can scrub it, That needs to cool down a bit. It's just a by product from wine making but it's used in many things from cookies to eggs to meringues and bringing stainless steel pots and pans and cookie trays also cake pans back to their original luster without any damage. If you ball up a piece of aluminum foil and use that to remove the burnt on "stuff", it works like a charm! Then rinse away. If it needs any tweaking, use a sponge with some Cream Of Tartar on it and wipe the bottom and sides. Make sure you rinse completely. Your pot, pan, cookie sheets and cake pans are brought back to life with this stuff! If you have jelly roll pans that need brought back to life, sprinkle the COT over entire surface add water to the top and place in the oven on 375* for 1 hour. Take the pan(s) out and cool down. Use a Scotch Brite sponge to clean the inside and outside of them and you'kk have really shiney pans again. FYI only use this on stainless steel pans. I wouldn't try this with coated ones. I don't think that is meant for those types.

Hi Blondelle, well I took back the Sauce pan, I just couldnt find that good enough of a reason to keep it, It has a hole in the lid, this is not good for most of the things that you would use it for so i traded it for a Calphalon one grill pan, ( not the non stick), we will see how that works out. I figure i would stick with the soup pot and get the newer model down the road,that should be a good combination

Thanks for the suggestions.
The manual made no mention of putting anything on the bottom and we wrongly assumed it could handle the heat as it claims it can.
I've seen different sites mentioning that you can or can't use oven cleaners with self cleaning ovens but I've also read the labels on many cans and they specifically claim they work with self cleaning ovens (you just don't turn the oven on though). I'm worried about them damaging the porcelain enamel even more...Any clues about this?

I was not suggesting using an oven cleaner. Just get the oven nice and hot - 450 degrees for about 30 min or so. Long enough to soften the plastic that is stuck. Then carefully scrape it away. It should be rather gooey at that point and come right up.

Hi,
It's not really plastic...it's an oven liner meant for high temperatures...it was "burned"on a little area. Now there is just residue left that I can't get off...
I think a harsh chemical might take it off but I'm worried about it damaging the oven although most of these cans now say they are ok with self cleaning ovens.
