Henna For Hair Color

My hair is naturally dark brown and would rather not use regular hair color and continue damaging my already thinning hair.

Can anyone recommend what color Henna to use? I don't want to go with black - just a little lighter.

Also, anyone that has used henna color instead of regular color, have you noticed a difference in hair texture?

Thanks!

Years ago I dyed my hair with Egyptian Henna. It used to be sold in a metal tin decorated with old egyptian style art. It was pure, powdered henna leaves. You mixed it with water. It smelled like cooked spinach. The problem with pure henna is it slightly turns your scalp orangey. It also tinted the worn porcelain in my bathtub. Henna coats your hair, so the hair is thicker. When my hair got wet, it smelled just like canned spinach. My hair dyed red and it shined scarlett. That freaked out a lot of people. Normally when sun hits shiney hair, the highlights are white, like a bright light, but my hair highlights were like a red traffic light. The henna coating builds up as you do touch ups. After a year of using henna, my hair in back was turning purple, like grape juice. The color was permanent. I couldnt even bleach it out. So there is the problem of the roots showing when you stop using it, because you cant use regular hair dyes to touch up as there might be a chemical reaction. Of course all hair coloring has the problem of what to do when you want to stop. But I will never forget that spinach smell that came out when I got caught in the rain

Welcome, Corpsman Cooper! There are wonderful, helpful gardeners on this forum. The info I had about henna is it is hardy in zones 9-12. You can grow it in pots and it does just fine. If you have clay soil you should make sure you provide good drainage because I have read that henna doesn't like wet feet. There was a local nursery in SW Florida that used to have the pink/red flowering kind but not anymore. I've only ever grown the cream flowered type. I got my first plant over 20 years ago at the Mounts Botanical Gardens Spring Fling from a local herb society. They can get tall but take well to pruning. If anyone would like seeds, just email me your address. My email is anglatina at aol dot com. Julie in WPB

Yup! They sure do, Klseiverd. Here's just one such retailer [below]. There are reams and reams of them. I'm so sorry for your broken bone. The whole ordeal sounds dreadful. I hurt just thinking about it. That's about the only malady I've never had...and hope I never do have. I understand your wish to doodle over the scar but remember...the scar will fade in time. That I can personally attest to. I don't know how permanent henna is but you may want to reconsider your plan. Also, as a precautionary measure...do check with your Dr before you put anything over or near the scar. I'd be concerned about infection or some other subcutaneous disruption. Beyond all of that...I hope you heal well and quickly. http://hennapennausa.com/

Graying hair and when to stop coloring it

When I decided to stop coloring my hair was because of a "cool hair" compliment. I had gone to a Federal agency to conduct a mediation and had to park in a pay parking lot. The mediation was in the summer and last nearly all day, it was successful. Regardless, as I was walking to my car, the young (probably HS senior) attendant told me that he loved the purple color of my hair and he thought it was cool. I thanked him. Inside I was humiliated. I decided right then that I would quit coloring my hair. Evidently the pigment needed to darken hair (my natural hair color was a dark brown) was red or purple. Regardless, even though the young attendant thought I was a cool grandma, I decided it was not cool for me. Still laugh about this.

Products sold as "black henna" or "neutral henna" are not made from true henna, but may be derived from indigo or cassia, and may contain unlisted dyes and chemicals. You run the risk of contact dermatitis as what they are calling "henna" is probably PPD. I have posted on this before in this forum. Do a Google. Concentrations of p-phenylenediamine (PPD) found in the "black henna" paste studied at the NYU School of Medicine this past summer contained nearly ten times the amount allowed in hair dye.

Henna is a plant that can only produce an orange dye. If you saw "black henna" being sold they are trying to fool you.

bud_wi I am so glad I read this post. Last time I had my hair done I had a horrible reaction to the hair color. Itchy for more than a week and it began when they first applied the color. I suspect PPD but my allergist is going to do a patch test on my back this coming Monday to see what exactly the irritation was from. So I've been contemplating henna and read online that it comes in more colors than just red. My hair is light brown (well, gray without color) and I have the gray roots and I'm dying about what am I going to do??!! Any suggestions out there?
