My concern with the shelves is that it looks like it would be easy to drop stuff into the toilet. I don't think they look that bad otherwise. I like the basket you have on the top shelf. I'd put ones just like it on the other two shelves as well and corral stuff in there. A realtor told she always rolls her towels for home showings. I've tried it and I think it does look better. Here is another vote for getting rid of the flowers. They don't add to the look of the room. I like your shower curtain. I think it is cute. Many of us with kids do have a kid themed bathroom so I don't think it is a detractor. The flower pictures on the wall don't go with the cats and dogs. I'd pick one theme or go neutral. I'd also hang a towel on the rack that goes with the color of whatever theme you use. This may just be me, but I don't like the racks that go over the shower head to hold shampoo and conditioner. I think crowded whenever I see them. Just for the time being until you sell, I would put the shampoo under the sink so it is out of sight. I'd get a small laundry or other draining type basket to hold all of the toys in one container. I used a use a huge plastic colander.

We are mid-remodel of our hall bathroom, which is also the kids' bathroom. I chose white tile walls throughout--including wainscoting. I like tile wainscoting because it is so much tougher than paint. I went with 6 x 6 with a grey pencil liner above and 4 x 4 white tile above the pencil liner in the shower. The floor is 12 x 24 medium grey with matching grout. IME, medium colors show the least dirt and the less grout to clean the better. The walls will be pale grey and the vanity will be a bright blue (benj. Moore paddington blue). eta. The vanity top will be a dark grey engineered quartz. Since this bathroom will someday be a teenage girl's bathroom, I wanted it to be as close to indestructible as I could get. I figured that meant engineered quartz or granite for the countertop and since I wanted grey, my GC said it would be a lot easier to find an engineered quartz remnant in grey.

caligirl - yeah, i hear ya on the toilet. Our house is over 100 years old, so pretty sure the standards for spacing wouldn't even be possible to accomplish in our tiny space. Lol! We are used to it, so it's really not a big deal for us. I'm not sure of exact measurements on either side of the toilet, but it's not too awful. It's not spacious, but it's not the worst. In comparison to many other homes in our little town, this is considered a large second bathroom! When we went house hunting 10 years ago, we really wanted to be close to the college my husband works at since it's a beautiful neighborhood, and that means older homes like ours. And about 90% of the ones we looked at had sub-optimal layouts for bathrooms or kitchen (and often both). As quirky and annoying as some of this is, it's actually a far step above some of the awful things we had as alternative options when we bought. There's basically 3 choices in our town - 100+ year old victorian with wonky renovations or bad layouts that need fixing, 1970s homes that are horribly dated and in less than desirable neighborhoods, or really overpriced brand new mcmansions. :-/ Or building new, I suppose. Here's a 2nd floor layout. I'm going to be straight to the point: we really don't want to take on a massive project that changes the footprint and walls of our second floor in order to perfect our bathroom. If it was just me? Sure. I'm up for anything. But I know my husband well enough to know he hates change and he would never go for it. I have a hard enough time convincing him to paint a room, I can't imagine he could visualize, let alone approve, that kind of change. Lol! Things that may be helpful to know about the rest of our house: we have a 3rd floor attic master bedroom with full bath (shower, jacuzzi tub, double sink, and walk in closet), and we have a first floor bath as well. Our main goal for THIS bathroom is wanting to update it and put in a stand up shower. The one thing that I definitely think could help us is changing the door swing to the bathroom! We could have it open out instead of in.

Dear Molly, I doubt you'll see this since the discussion is 2 years old and you must have made a decision by now. You sound EXACTLY like me. I've looked high and low. My home isn't nearly as old, but it is an old bath I'm re-doing and nothing satisfies me. The porcelain encaustics have fewer grout lines, but lack the softer subtle feeling I want. I used to have solid hardwood in bathroom when I lived up north, and I found it as easy to care for as anything barring any accidents - and that's living on prayer. I would get a fake wood, but my other floors are real wood and I think it would be a wrong look. As for the hex, the best pattern I've seen - to my eye anyway, is the snowflake. The flower and diamonds make me tired. I think solid wood really is the best if craziest-seeming - or painted wood is BEAUTIFUL - light gray painted or white painted. Both just beautiful, but risk. Tell me what you finally did if you see this. I'm so interested.
