big tile......small bathroom
Comments (6)One thing to think about if you're going to cut the tiles down like that is to that a tile with an eased (rounded-over) factory edge will have three eased edges and one sharp-cornered edge, which can look a bit, well, odd. (Or maybe I'm the only person who notices that sort of thing. :-)) If it's an unglazed through-body porcelain your tile person can smooth the edge over so it looks somewhat more like the other edges, and lay the tile carefully so that the cut edge isn't as obvious (for example, putting the cut edge of a floor tile facing away from the door) or trim off just enough from all four edges to remove that eased bit and make all four sides the same. A tile that already has a square edge would be a lot easier to work with though. Or you can keep looking for tiles that are the right shape to begin with. You might have to go a bit further afield but 12x24s definitely do exist....See MoreLarge wall tile in bathroom- 13x39 anybody?
Comments (17)Thanks so much! I just finished the first of two bathrooms in a condo. The tiles (Daltile Veneziano) were uneven in thickness and had uneven edges. I did not realize when I ordered how this would impact the installation. The tiler had a tough time with installation and I had to make some decisions that I am not happy with. (Tile jutted out so vanity could not be fit tight against the tiled wall, so had to use short backsplash, etc etc) http://products.daltile.com/series.cfm?series=462 If only I had learned more from reading the great threads here, and asked questions before purchasing! The literature even specifies that the tile has irregular edges but I did not pay enough attention. So how does one learn, before purchasing, if the tiles are warped or bowed? Will this always be visible in the sample, and do most dealers divulge this to the buyer? Thanks so much!!...See MoreMedium or Large Size Tile for Small Bathroom Floor
Comments (28)I always appreciate that people provide comments, even if well after the original posting date, as I am one who researches things and may be awhile going forth with a project. However, this bathroom update was completed months ago. I chose the larger tiles and am glad I did. BTW, the tile manufacturer will provide details on tile layout. This happened to be an Italian porcelain tile and, as far as offset, it needed to be in thirds, not half. Additionally, this tile was thicker than most porcelain tiles, so something to consider when you purchase tile. Cleaning was never an issue, only room size and perspective. My tile guy always does great work....See MoreSmall Bathroom Tiles
Comments (1)is the large cabinet staying? the bathtub is staying and youre tiling the surround? can we a pic of it? (does it go to the ceiling, the tile? do you want a light over the tub?) the current lighting is really dim. is that changing? is there a ceiling light? I ask because this affects the tile choice too. doing a large tile on your floor would be a waste because of all the cuts. Which is fine, but just know that you'll only need about 6-9 of those large tiles. I'd do an 18x18, or a 24x24. to give you an idea, this is my neighbors 5x8 bathroom. She wanted a shower only so we took out the tub. The floor tiles were 24x24 and I think I used 6 of them. She wanted the bold print tile on the one wall and the subways on the other. the shower floor is an elongated hex this is another one. super small the sink is behind the door. We put in a pocket door and the owner got a floating vanity he liked the marble mosaic for behind the vanity (which BTW, always try and do a wall mount faucet. it frees up more countertop space) owner borrowed some space from the garage and pushed back the shower Tile floor in there is a porcelain charcoal herringbone, and the outside tiles were a 12x24 porcelain in a deep, dark charcoal or Anthracite. I'm showing you these so you can see what different shapes look like in a small space similar space to yours w/a 2" black hex floor and white 3x6 herringbone subway tile wall and shower I think you could do a scallop in the shower, or even on you floor. (have you seen Tilebar.com new scalloped tiles?...See Moredkauf
