Small Bathroom Tiles

Hello! We need help with picking tiles that will be a good fit together.

Our bathroom is only 5x8. We are installing a pocket door to make it feel larger. There is no window.

I’d like a blue vanity with brass hardware, a large mirrored medicine cabinet that will span across the vanity and toilet.

I’d like the tiles to be very neutral, white/greys. I love hexagon tiles and scallop tiles but know they just won’t work together. I’m trying to understand the relationship between small and large tiles while within a small space. I’ve read that large tiles give the illusion of a larger area but wonder if it matters if it is on the floor or the wall.

1) Large tiles on wall or floor?

2) Would you choose scallop shower walls with rectangular floor tiles? OR hexagonal floor tiles with subway shower tiles?

2) Would you recommend 2 in or 4 in hexagon tiles?

3) Tiles up the wall to the mirror? Or paint?

is the large cabinet staying?

the bathtub is staying and youre tiling the surround?

can we a pic of it? (does it go to the ceiling, the tile? do you want a light over the tub?)

the current lighting is really dim. is that changing?

is there a ceiling light?

I ask because this affects the tile choice too.

doing a large tile on your floor would be a waste because of all the cuts. Which is fine, but just know that you'll only need about 6-9 of those large tiles. I'd do an 18x18, or a 24x24.

to give you an idea, this is my neighbors 5x8 bathroom. She wanted a shower only so we took out the tub. The floor tiles were 24x24 and I think I used 6 of them.

She wanted the bold print tile on the one wall and the subways on the other.

the shower floor is an elongated hex

this is another one. super small

the sink is behind the door.

We put in a pocket door and the owner got a floating vanity

he liked the marble mosaic for behind the vanity (which BTW, always try and do a wall mount faucet. it frees up more countertop space)

owner borrowed some space from the garage and pushed back the shower

Tile floor in there is a porcelain charcoal herringbone,

and the outside tiles were a 12x24 porcelain in a deep, dark charcoal or Anthracite.

I'm showing you these so you can see what different shapes look like in a small space

similar space to yours w/a 2" black hex floor and white 3x6 herringbone subway tile wall and shower

I think you could do a scallop in the shower, or even on you floor. (have you seen Tilebar.com new scalloped tiles?

The room will usually fool the eye into taking on the aspect of the building material. So if you use the tile vertically, yes, it could make the room look "taller". Ceiling colors versus wall colors can do the same. If you had a ceiling that was darker than the wall color, the darker color can attract attention, and visually make the ceiling appear to be lower than it is. A lighter colored ceiling can make the ceiling appear higher. Same with floor. Floor tile in a linear or stacked pattern will pull the eye from one wall to the opposite wall, the shortest distance. Tile on a diagonal can pull the eye on a diagonal, the longer dimension. That can make the room to appear more expansive. If you're into psycho-babble mind-melding voodoo stuff like that.

What's the right adhesive?

Wakol D 3330 luxury vinyl adhesive. Apply it and wait until it dries clear, before installation. Similar to contact cement/adhesive. You will need to grind the coating off the tile, grind the SLC flat and apply Wakol's D 3035 primer for bond enhancement first. Skiimming the tile with SLC or skim coat compound will prevent the grout lines from telegraphing through.
