is there a space between the toilet tank and the wall behind it?

Just wondering if people have their toilet tanks right against the wall or is there some space?

I will be putting in a new small bathroom in a basement that we will be finishing soon and after I looked at my own tight powder room, I realized that my Toto toilet tank there is at least 2.5" from the wall and the space in front of the toilet is quite tight. I realize that the toilet had to line up with the drain hole underneath, but I am now wondering if a space is necessary and what do people have?

I am wondering if the drain can be moved now before the basement below is finished?

Toilets come in different "rough in" sizes. The typical size is 12", but there are also 10" and 14" sizes. Many Toto toilets have "unifit" adapters in those differing sizes. Measure from the center of the drain hole in the floor to the finish wall (tile, drywall, beadboard, etc.) to find the size you need.

Our Toto is a 12" rough in size and has about 3/4" between the tank and wall. 2.5" is way too much, especially if the space in front is tight. Sounds like you may need a 14" rough-in piece...

It all depends on the SPECIFIC toilet you are using. Most have some sort of space between the tank and the wall, but there are some models that are designed to be flush with the wall like this one:

The one with the shelf, a few I've seen don't hinge, that's what I thought was odd about it, you'd think it would be. I wouldn't consider the one in the wall anyhow and I guess those that do it would depend on the wall and what's behind it. For me, I've got a toilet on the wall behind the toilet, but just the same, I don't like the look, it just had me stumped. I need to find a good toilet that doesn't take up much floor space. We want an elongated one and Kohler has the Rialto, but the reviews I've read are awful, which surprises me, being its Kohler, but I guess they can make a lemon with the best of them! Thanks!!!

When you install a wall hung toilet you are remodeling in a bigger way than if you just replace a floor-mount toilet bowl. What to Do about The hole: - you can remove it. This is work. - you can use the same drain for the new toilet, if this improves your layout. This is also work. Doing so works well with new venting from above, but it also works unvented, because toilets are designed to be generally unvented. Wallmount toilets and rear mount toilets have the advantage of being able to have their drains be vented before going down under the floor. The Geberit drain can be oriented left or right (sideways) to pick up a vented drain. Or they can be oriented to go straight downhill. Hth

If you want it to stand off a little there should be enough wiggle room in where the bolts attach to the closet flange and if you look at the toilet where the holes are that attach it to the floor you can see that the holes are probably 3/8 " round while the bolts themselves are about 3/16" little wiggle room there as well. Personally I like my toilets to touch the wall that way I know nobody will lean back hard and bend the bowl back possibly cracking it, not that I have ever seen that happen.

A plumber noted that the water tank on an in-wall toilet is plastic which probably won't hold up as well over the decades as the regular porcelain tanks. So, replacing the in-wall tank sometime in the future without destroying your slab should be a consideration that the tileable access panels will accommodate. And you can avoid an in-wall tank with a Sloan valve if you have municipal water.

Our home is about 20 years old. We replaced the toilets a few years ago and now have gaps in the back that we didn't have before and I hate the way it looks. We live in an area with water restrictions so we replaced with the best low flow we could find without making a project out of it. Next time we'll pay more attention to the dimensions.
