Does Merlot have to be refrigerated after it's opened?

A dinner guest, helping to clean up the table, placed an opened bottle of some very good Merlot in the pantry (1 week ago). I just found it, and was wondering if it should be dumped, or put in the refrigerator to save as a cooking wine.

(No, I won't taste it...I cook with wine, but don't drink)

Morgan. In my opinion I would dump it. Once wine is opened it oxidizes and starts to deteriorate. If it had been recorked almost immediately you could have even drank this the next day with just a little deterioration and if you had refrigerated it you could have used it for cooking within a few days. It really wouldn't be fit to drink and therefore it isn't fit to cook with either.

I wouldn't dump it....it will for sure be more sour....but makes a great marinade.
Also, the less "head room" in a bottle the better it keeps. So if you have a 1/3 of a bottle left, it will keep better if you pour it into something smaller.

That is very pretty, I really like it! I'm loving the new varieties of coneflowers. I don't have many. I have been fortunate with the Big Sky series apparently. I have I think they were called Harvest Moon & Sundown. Both have come back several years now, & Sundown has produced lots of seedlings that look like its parent. I got Hot Papaya a couple of years ago at the end of season clearance. It was late to come back last year & didn't bloom for some reason. It is blooming now & simply glows, I'm really impressed with it. I know you grow lots of echinacea & test the seeds. Do you know if this one grows true to seed? I have it 50' or so from my other echinaceas, would love to grow some more plants from it.

Papilio names Merlot Moon.....???

I did read that this company changed names a few years ago and the previous name had many negative reviews. I do like their "compare" feature. When I compared the two, it did seem Mellott Moon seemed a bit more red. That could be easily achieved in photoshop ...or it could be just me wanting to see a difference. John Scheepers is offering papilio improved this year. The picture is of a papilio, but the description describes narrow recurred petals. I always saw papilio described as being broad. I actually was thinking of trying it to see if It might be Jungle Star before Jungle Star became available again on RC.

i was asking the 'sperts' if the foo foo redbuds are all grafted ... and i suspect they are .. and if so.. they are grafted onto green ones.. which might be all you have left ... and those are rather cheap ... so if after playing with this one for the year.. you might just decide to divest .. and buy a nice one ... or another foo foo one ... i when i moved.. i took about 1650 plants with me.. none of which were my beloved trees .. in hindsight.. you probably should have left it ... ken

I would taste it and if you like it drink it. In the old days wine was not refrigerated after opening.

If it was corked it will be fine. I make wine & very often have some left in the bottle. Most often I will put the cork in & put it in the fridge, but alot of times it sits out & it stays fine.
