Eating Chaya...Does it really taste good?
Comments (8)If you like "greens" you will enjoy Chaya. It is firmer than spinach, but not as tough/chewy as collards. Chaya is great used instead of grape leaves to wrap rice/meat mixtures, in lasagna, and in soups. As a veggie alone, I like it with grated cheese on top. Chaya responds well to pruning. I chopped mine down to 3' stumps a short time ago, and it is now over 10' tall and very lush. The three-lobed variety is the main one I have eaten. I've had some of the multi-lobed leaves mixed in, and didn't notice a difference.I didn't strip the veins. The younger leaves are more tender, but you can use any of them if you plan a longer cooking time. Should be delish with ham hocks and a dash of vinegar when served. Yummy! Wash your hands well after picking. The sap can be irritating. The leaves are supposed to have stinging hairs, but mine don't. Lisa...See MoreNeed ideas on what to grow, what tastes good?
Comments (12)Here's a link to the Vegetable Gardening Guide on IFAS: http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/vh021 If you scroll way down, Table 4 is a chart with planting dates for each vegetable. IFAS also has a lot of specific articles on individual vegetables. As you'll see from the planting chart, there are a lot of veggies you can plant and grow all through the winter. I grew up *hating* peas (English peas), since I had only eaten canned ones - blech. When I finally had a garden of my own, I kept reading how great peas were fresh from the garden and grew my own. Wow! If you've never had peas that were freshly picked, I recommend leaving some space in your garden to plant them in in January or February. If possible, pick them immediately before eating and don't overcook them. They are actually really good raw - I've been known to eat them all before making it back into the house. Good luck!...See MoreHow to make fish not taste like fish
Comments (36)" Love those tiny little crunchy fishies, dipped in cocktail sauce and eaten bones, tail and all. " Me too, Annie! ! ! ! And I had some this year for the first time in ages! It's not anything that is known in these parts, But a large store about 50 miles from here had some. I bought about 5 lbs, and really "pigged out" (for lack of a better term) that night. I have the rest in meal sized packages in the freezer. I use them as a 'reward' for myself when I accomplish something I've been dreading doing! "I don't get it. Fish is fish. I WANT it to taste like fish. I don't want it to taste like beef, chicken, or anything else. " I agree with that 100%, too. I like to 'eat healthy', and I try to most of the time. But I am not willing to torture myself with food I don't like. If I were intent on giving up red meats, I would try to find something that I enjoyed To replace it with. As many have mentioned above, There are a number of very mild tasting fish. Preparing/serving them with a highly seasoned sauce might do the job for you. Good luck in your quest. Comments (4)I don't know yet...it's for dinner tonight. I'm a much better cook, so I do most of the cooking even tho I don't get home from work until around 6:30. It's challenging to find things that can be all but ready when I get home. I'll have him take the foil off for the last half hour....See More- 24 years ago
