Range vent hoods auto ramp-up feature: useful?

We are shopping for a range hood for a kitchen remodel and my direct experience with good range hoods is minimal. Some brands have a feature where high heat causes the blower to automatically ramp up to high. My concerns:

1) Is it useful? Necessary?

2) Can it--should it--be overridden?

3) Is it a hazard should a grease fire occur?

My girlfriend's Jenn-air range has a downdraft vent on the range top that goes on automatically when the left side burners are turned on. This feature seems to have been designed by people who apparently were demented and had never actually cooked anything except hot dogs. (Sorry for that interjection; I've just wanted to get in a deserved dig at the geniuses at Jenn-Air who designed that range. If I had wanted to cook with a horizontal flame, I would have asked for it!)I do tend to get annoyed with certain features being automatic when they should be volitional. Any thoughts about, or experiences with, this feature? Thank you very much.
