Large-mouth yet small pedestal sink, and other anxieties

Hi,

I have a small full bathroom that desperately needs to be renovated. I'm contemplating a pedestal sink (to avoid the heavy vanity look), and high, wall mounted storage, to enable me to take advantage of the room's 10 foot ceilings. Can someone recommend

1. a good-quality sink brand that makes smallish units that have a wide bowl?

2. a site where I can find innovative tall bathroom storage -- floor or wall mounted? Or any other bright ideas?

Unfortunately, unique can sometimes mean.. more expensive, and my neighbour found that out the hard way. Depending on your budget, you may find something like this line is appropriate. Neighbour has two, one smaller than the other, but both work like a charm in her guest bath/spa room.

There is storage for smaller things on the doors, such as personal hygiene items, shampoos etc.

Do you like more natural materials, or leaning towards chromy/shiny/glassy things? LOL

What kind of items do you plan to store? Towels and linens? Do you want buy bulkier packs of toilet paper etc that need to be stored? I only ask because we ran into a couple of storage issues when I realize my under mount sink in the vanity was going to eat up some valuable space I had already allocated. Kept the sink, but had to build some extra storage in the next door laundry room.

Good luck with finding your items! It's also a good idea (first hand experience here again LOL) to have "unique" items on hand before construction begins. You may need to adapt plans for wall studs/wiring/tiling around your items.

Check out St Thomas Liberty sink. We installed it in our bathroom 4 years ago and really like it. BTW, this sink won 'sink of the year' at This Old House for 2007.

Can't help with storage. I do like Restoration Hardware. They always have beautiful things - if a bit pricey. You could also look for an antique something to re-purpose.

I was surprized to see this thread reappear and thank you for the pictures. I did go with the toto/colonial white toilet and the retrospect however they will not be installed until May or June. I did call both companies and they sent samples which helped. I ended up ordering the colonial for all three bathrooms because it seemed to go best with the Porcher in one bath and the Bain white tub in the MB. I am a bit concerned about the height of the retrospect but it is in a guest house and I couldn't find anything else I liked in that size or price range. runninginplace one of my baths will be very much like yours, I love yours. My floor will be black because I am afraid of having to clean the white. Is your's white? how is the upkeep? Is the cabinet from Restoration? I am looking for one but Restoration didn't fit into my budget. tugran

Yes, I wish I had a little alcove space in my half-bath like Bob's to cradle a sink like that. I also wish the arrangement of my room was like all the powder rooms pictured above, walking in FACING the fixtures. Instead, you walk in facing a window, and the sink is to the immediate right, and the toilet is on the same wall to the left of the sink. You lose a lot of the beauty of the fixtures that way. I love looking straight into the room to see the sink right there. As we've seen from all the pics posted here, a sink and faucet are not merely utilitarian fixtures. They can serve as striking sculpture! (Ditto the toilet actually! There are some beautiful ones out there now!). I'll try to make the best of the configuration I have. (If someone will get their caboose over here to help me with my project!)

Lots of replies! In our master bath we have a rectangular mirror with a pretty frame. Then because the space is only about 4 ft. wide with a wall on both sides, I had the workers put an inset medicine cabinet on each side. When I want to see the sides or back of my hair I just open the appropriate side mirror. And we each have our own medicine cabinet! Works for me. Plus it reflects lots of light from the sconces on each side of the framed mirror. I also had them tile up that area under the framed mirror about a foot high. Keeps lots of water splashes off the mirror. Looks nicer too because the tile has a beautiful 3 inch high band of "deco" tile that continues around the 3 sides of the area. There is just one sink in the counter area because my husband and I are hardly ever needing the sink at the same time. We separated the toilet, tub, shower part of the bath from the sink with a pocket door so that while one is in there, the other can be using the sink without a steamed up mirror and all. It works great. I had seen this set-up in some motels and liked it a lot. Makes the bathroom do double duty!

If it's temporary, go inexpensive. If it's really that important to you to get the $2000 vanity, then you could even go "completely utilitarian" and it'll be an incentive to save up so you can get what you really want. As has been mentioned by others, you can get a very good quality salvaged pedestal that will probably be bit unique compared to the box store offering. The uniqueness of it can be an upside. And on the flip side, sure, why not a "box store" pedestal in a powder room? I put a roughly $100 pedestal in my first floor powder room back when I built almost 20 years ago. It's still there. It's decent looking, I sort of like the look. Water comes out of the faucet and goes down the drain just like it would in a $5000 sink. I have no regrets. More importantly, my wife has no regrets either. If you get something temporary, you can resell or donate when you replace it. Not sure where you are in construction, but if you're really concerned with the aesthetics of a temporary pedestal, the rough plumbing locations in the wall sometimes need to be fine-tuned to get a good looking installation with a pedestal. With a vanity it's not so important as the stub outs will be hidden behind closed doors. Some pedestals require blocking, or a variation of blocking, to secure the pedestal top to the wall. You asked: "Is this viable for a year or so?" Only you can define that. It really depends on how accommodating you are, and how important the look you are going for in that room is to you. In my case, a year passes by pretty quickly. If I lack storage "here", I find it or create it "there".

Toto is currently the most widely accepted high style and quality toilet in the US today. What most people dont know is that Toto also makes a full line of kitchen and bathroom sinks which exemplify the same quality and style. After being blown away by the prices of tall bath storage cabinets, I bought a petite (small footprint, but tall) china hutch on ebay and plan to use that in the bathroom. Glass doors on top (pretty!) and a drawer and cabinet doors below. Bought it first and matched the cabinetry to the mahogany, but you can also get a less-than perfect model and fill any dents and scratches and repaint. Saved myself a cool $500 bucks that way.

Check out the Kohler Memoirs pedestal sink - it has a wide rim so can fit soap, etc.

Also, homeclick sorts sink pedestals by size (19" and under, 20-22"), so you can start there for small pedestals, then check the specs on the bowl size. good luck,

We have the 24" Kohler Memoirs Ped Sink and are very happy with it. In fact I am ordering it for our new house because it's square design I can put a curling iron on it, it rests a nice towel, toothbrush holder, soap etc. It's very spacious.
