Which is a favored brand:48' blt-in refrigerator

Hi; I'm normally not on this forum but am inquiring for a friend. Their GE 48" wide blt-in refrig, which just broke down last night, has had it and they don't feel it's worth putting in more money to the several-already repairs over the years. In checking around for them, it seems EVERY brand has numerous complaints. They were seriously considering the Viking but it does, indeed, have quite a few negative types of reviews when I've searched - same for Sub Zero also, I believe. Is there a consensus of over-all "best"? They want SS, no through the door ice/water; just ice inside is fine. Thank you so much.

One man's appliance treasure seems to be another man's lemon. I've really enjoyed my Sub-Zero 48" that we bought in 1994. It has never had a service call and still looks like new. The only caveat to that is the door-mounted ice & water dispenser, which went out a long time ago. We didn't care about the feature so we never had it fixed. (I also felt it was probably due to minerals from our water.) The new ones have the water dispenser inside in any case.

I'll be very surprised if you get a consensus, but I'll be watching with interest.

I love my Thermador twins. I have a 30" fridge and 30" freezer. You can do either a 24"/24" or a 30"/18" to get a 48". I found I was able to combine my 42" GE monogram and a seperate GE profile fridge into the new twins with room to spare- the layout is very efficient.

yup that is exactly one way that you can freeze them - throw them in a bag & toss them in the freezer. They sound like billiard balls clacking around in the bag when they are frozen. This method has the added benefit of helping you remove the skins - you just drop the frozen tomatoes in a bowl of hot water and you can rub the skins right off after a minute of soaking. The tomatoes will be of a softer texture, but not as bad as tomatoes from a storebought or home-preserved can. Canning salsa and tomato sauce is really very easy, you don't need a lot of space or equipment (you could get started for less than $20 if you have a big spaghetti pot and a normal equipped kitchen (spoons and bowls and such) and it is a lot more space and energy efficient way to store the tomatoes. Making salsa is easy and makes great gifts and saves a lot of money (I love salsa). Making sauce takes a lot of work, though, and saves fairly little money. But it tastes a LOT better than storebought, and you don't have to pay income tax on your savings. I just bought a dehydrator and I'm hoping that will be an interesting way to preserve the taste...

Jsvand5, I don't know of any commercial source for Goose Creek seeds, but two people listed Goose Creek in the 2008 Seed Savers Exchange Yearbook. If you aren't a member of SSE yet, this would be a very good time to join because the 2009 Yearbook is just now going to the printer and will be out in a month or two. The Yearbook is a very good place to look for varieties that you can't find anywhere else, as many members list those for which they have enough seeds to offer. Laurel, there was never any patent granted for Goose Creek, nor will there be. Jimmy Williams applied for a patent on November 11, 2004 but it was never granted. Goose Creek was not "invented" by Jimmy Williams, and as noted above, the stages of ripeness described for Goose Creek are not unique to Goose Creek. Jimmy Williams can apply for a patent if he wishes but he won't get one. The United States Patent and Trademark Office has a public web page at http://patft.uspto.gov/ where anyone can look up patent applications as well as the patents that have been granted, and you will see that there is an application but it has NOT been granted. Not really. All I had was a cheap Walmart dehydrator with no thermostat. Shitaki mushrooms are tougher than the white button kind in the grocery, so I suspect they will take a bit more heat. Brush them off gently, you can wash before rehydrating them. If you plan to grind stems.. break them off and dry alongside the cap as it will probably take longer for them. They are pretty doggone hard, so you will need something with some umph to turn them to powder. I used a Vita Mix... the old stainless kind from the 1970s. That thing was a life saver for me. I ran my tomatoes raw through that and then through an old Wear Ever cone shaped potato ricer to take out skins and seeds. Bring to a boil before filling jars and processing to take out the excess air. Fast way to make the 40 quarts of so of tomato juice my DH could go through in one winter. Same with berries of all kinds, only I froze the pulp for making jam whenever we needed more. Peaches, plums, etc. went in raw. Apples, however, were washed, stemmed, quartered and then cooked.. they went directly into the ricer. Mostly they were turned into apple butter. We had keeping apples that held for most of the winter, in cold storage for fresh use. I'm rattling on again... sorry. I must be getting old. LOL Millie

And the Thermador columns might be on sale as a closeout because they are upgrading the interior and changing the shelves slightly. Just saw a pair for around $6k, or best offer, at my local appliance dealer.

I can't get the Subzero Pro48G off of my mind.
Stainless inside and out....I love the glass door.

1)Sub-Zero. The only problem with them is the in-door ice dispenser has lots of problems but OP's potential buyers don't care about that.Their new ulta-violet NASA type air scrubber is kinda cool.

2)Gaggenau-Miele columns. Thermador cheaper and similar except for the bins and interior. Gagg SS inside as well. Miele offers 24 monitoring via wifi.Super high quality hinges.Really like the drawers too.

3)Jenn-Air or KitchenaAid.

I would stay away from Viking. I like Liebherr for custom panel applications but they use cheaper 430 SS for their SS versions and it is thin SS panels at that.

We have a Liebherr 48" all fridge on one side and top fridge / bottom freezer on the other and it has been wonderful to use and quiet running. The freezer bins hold a lot of items and are easy to sort.
