I wouldn't think so (I could be wrong, though). DW salt is much coarser grained than kosher salt.

I found Somat (Miele salt) on Amazon, which also offers a quantity deal. It's also usually available at dealers that carry Miele vacuum cleaners.

The first question need to answer is whether or not your water supply is hard enough to warrant the use of softener salt in your dishwasher. The Miele owners manual will tell you at what level water softening is appropriate. Many municipal water supplies in North America don't require the use of the water softener feature. Your local water company can advise you of the water hardness level in your area.

Many European dishwashers include a softener because the water in most of Europe is many times harder than the water commonly found in N. America. If your municipal water supply isn't mineral laden or considered hard, you don't need to use the softener feature. If you have well water prone to leaving white deposits, the use of the softener feature will probably provide some relief. If your water isn't considered hard or mineral-laden, consult the Miele owner's manual for instructions on how to disable the "Add Salt" indicator. It's very simple.

If you do need to utilize the softener feature, dishwasher salt (Somat or Miele are the usual brands) is available from your Miele dealer or from a number of online sources for $10-$12 for a package just the right size for a single fill. While it sounds kind of expensive, it's not something you need to do very often. In fact, unless you run multiple loads per day, a single salt fill will usually last somewhere between 5-9 months.

Several years ago the U.S. Air Force conducted a study and determined that ordinary kosher salt was a suitable substitute for dishwasher salt, although you need to be sure that it doesn't contain anti-caking agents (ordinary table salt is NOT appropriate). Diamond Crystal is one brand of kosher salt that can be used. The coarseness of the grains doesn't make any difference. As a matter of fact, Somat dishwasher salt used to be flaked into a form very similar to ordinary kosher salt. For some reason, Somat changed to a much coarser form several years ago -- but either form works equally well.

FWIW, our water is slightly hard. We've been running our DW since April or May, and have only needed to add salt once so far (early Jan), so for us, adding salt might only be a once every 6 months sort of thing.

I just finished a load this morning and found that the DW is requesting salt. This will be my 2nd box of salt since I bought the DW in June 2006. If you have one of the newer models it will read your water hardness and display it. What model do you have?

where i live is notorious for hard water - the reason we bought the miele in the first place...however, when we ran the cycle to indicate whether or not your water is hard enough to warrent salt, it came up negative...have been using it w/o salt for several months now and the glasses, etc are spotless...(my glass shower doors on the other hand definitely need squeegeeing with every use to prevent mineral build up)
