Need some help with the value of this bed???

I am in the middle of selling my parent's house. My father purchased this bed about twenty years ago at an auction. I do not know the history of the bed. It is in fair/good shape. There are some scratches and missing pieces. I have some of the missing pieces. I need help with value and how should I go about selling it?

It's a late Victorian ... appears to be burled walnut panels. The style is often called "Eastlake", although it's really a re-make of Renaissance high-panel beds and called "Gothic Revival" or something. The wrap-around base is characteristic of European beds.

Value? Who knows, because it varies with region and demand.I'd check out several antiques shops to see if they have similar pieces, and what they are asking for them.

Beds are expensive to ship, so your best bet would be selling it on Craigslist.com or the "local" eBay auctions.

I think it's Renaissance Revival which would put it well before the Eastlake period. Immediatly post Civil War.....and it doesn't have the straight lined geometric feel that usually characterizes Eastlake.
What size is the bed?....3/4 or a 54 inch full? That will greatly influence the value.
Also is that the only piece of the set?....and what is the mattress and spring like?
I see you are in Kentucky....as I recall that style is popular there....
Don't know the size of your town....but I would seek out a consignment antiques shop......or seek an auctioneer who takes single piece consgignments.
As for what it's worth....again depends on the crowd at the sale....but I would think in the neighborhood of $2200.
The example shown is a complete set....worth considerably more than just a bed....but your bed is nicer....and the location is near you.

Better off to post in the Landscape Design forum. You will need pics showing a better view of the outside. Also provide the direction your home faces (east, west, etc), and what you would like to do in your yard--do you have pets, children, want to grill out frequently, etc. For plant suggestions, take pics and go to a good local nursery. They will know what grows best in the area.

It appears to yet have its original feet. If so, that is great. I assume that the decorative sidewings and top piece are veenered. The grain direction has been very carefully chosen, a mark of a good cabinet maker.

Any marks on the bottom of the drawers or stickers on the backs? Can you show the drawer construction? It resembles the high-end pieces from the 1940s and early 50s - well-built revivals of various older styles. Often sold in LARGE sets. There is a slim outside chance it's "Colonial Revival" from the 1870s ... again they were well built, but showing influence of several styles.

Seems like I remember something like this in late 1940-50. I remember that kind of heavy, tweedy type shade in people's houses. Or maybe that is just way light is shining on the shade. You had to get right under the shade to read anything. I like the base.

I was able to take the bedding off today and the bed is stamped with J & F Werner, then it reads Cabinet ?? something I couldn't make out and I believe the date was 1824. No I have no other pieces.

Could it have been 1874?? I think that would be more the era..
The marks of manufacture will tell a lot.....1824 would be wholly hand done....1874 could be partly maching sawn and manufactured nails and screws.
I'm sorry you don't have more pieces.......the bed is great....
Also? what size?

It could be a seven. It was scratched off some and hard to read. There was a full size mattress in it. It is a great bed, I wish I had room for it at my own house.

I'd believe 1874. That puts it right in the middle of the late-Victorian love of ornate. Because of the style, I would NOT believe 1824.

Unfortunately the structure makes it hard to use anything but a standard full mattress, but as a girl's fantasy bed (sell it for a "young princess") it would look good.

Check with some antiques dealers and resale shops to see what they are asking for similar beds ... I have a dresser and small chest that would blend nicely with the bed, so lack of a set is not an issue.
