Yes, pull out the whole thing and start over. BIG house, BIG lawn, BIG driveway, ITTY BITTY flower bed, proportioned microscopically. By all means, start over and give your new bed generous proportions, a minimum of 6 foot of depth, a broad sweeping curve, let it eat up as much of the lawn as you are willing to garden in. Feel free to step AWAY from the house. Make no small plans, dream big.

Not everybody can afford feeding plants with steroids, Patty. To the best of my knowledge only you, Roselee, Jolana, Jim and RC do that. Seriously, now. I don't know. What kind of Coral Bean do you have? The genus Erythrina has 130 species but most of them are not cold hardy.I'm pretty sure I have E.herbacea. There are a bunch of Erythrina species that are trees. In fact I saw one the other day at the Nature Center of San Marcos. It was about 12' tall and had an 8" caliper. However, E. herbacea is supposed to grow up to 48" (I checked on Dave's Garden). I am actually going to contradict a bit what some others have said. I think you should only do this bed this year. Move on to making other beds in following years. It is important to enjoy your flowers too and that you not spend all your time digging, weeding, fertilizing, and watering. It is also better to grow a few things well than a lot of things badly. Just my opinion I guess. (If you find yourself with a well manicured bed though and jonesing for more garden projects, don't let me stop you. My advice is just coming from someone who has bitten off more than he can chew before. It is good to complete one project utterly before opening a new can of worms.) And your pussy willow isn't going to immediately become a large tree. You have a few years to plant whatever around it. Stay true to your original vision.
