Natural Gas Grill Quick Connect Hose question

I recently purchased a new home and have purchased a NG grill that came with a gray plastic\rubber extension hose and a quick connect coupling. When I connected the grill I found that the shut off valve for the grill line was left on by the previous owner while the quick connect end was just closed while no appliance was connected. My question is do I need to disconnect the hose after each time I use the grill or is it ok to leave connected for the whole season? Also the hose is in direct sunlight at times during the day. Does this pose any danger since it has gas in it?

I've used the quick connect connection on my Weber NG grills for years; the last flexible hose connection survived the hash FL environment for 10 years without a problem. As you discovered the connector is designed to shutoff the gas supply if removed from its mate. I rarely remove mine and it is in an enclosed patio where children are not present so I even leave the gas supply on most of the time; however, most will recommend turning off a physical gas valve between uses for the most safe operation just like you would with an LP tank.

Where is the shut-off valve? Why not just leave the hose connected and use the shut-off valve? (Of course, if it's inside, this doesn't help you at all).

Maybe the handle on the valve is turning, but the insides are not. Also, follow the line back into the house to see if there might be another valve downstream that got shut off. Another possibility is that the female portion of the quick connect is probably steel, and being in the weather, has developed some rust inside and a check ball is hanging up.

I also have a natural gas grill that we push around the patio on a 12ft hose. I have been previously told by someone who knows that we couldn't extend the hose. After reading your post I decided to get a more definitive answer. My father-in-law, who was in the gas business for many years, says that adding more hose will reduce the gas flow a small amount. The grill will still work, there are no safety issues, but the BTU output will be reduced somewhat. Perhaps an imperceptible amount depending on the length of the hose. Unlike the pipe that brings the gas to your patio, the NG hose has small corrugations, or ridges, on the inside that slightly restrict the air flow. This results in less gas to the burner. How much less? Dunno.

Natural gas has a real low delivery pressure most likely there is nothing wrong with the valve or piping. You probably simply have a spider web in your burner orfice. Remove your burner and clean the entire assembly and you will be good to go.

Try blowing it out with a compressor or clearing it with a wire. Spiders build nests on these cavities blocking flow. Ron

The shut off valve is outside near the gas meter. It seems like the valve is seazed since I can't turn it with my hand.
