Maybe if you give us some specifics about what you don't like about tomatoes in terms of flavor, texture, etc. that might help us steer you toward tomato varities that might meet your needs. For example, you are mentioning a sweet variety (as opposed to an acidic type) as appealing to you.

I don't like to eat tomatoes, but I LOVE to grow them! One that I actually liked the flavor of was Bradley. Its a smallish tom cult, very sweet in my experience. Beautiful deep crimson fruits that are usually no bigger than softballs. They're good on salads, sandwiches, or canned. They aren't mealy either.

If you are only planting two tomatoes, don't bother with the seeds. I would just buy plants when they come out. When we've "brought you over to the dark side" and you love tomatoes, then it would be worth the bother of tomatoes from seeds.

For nice salad tomatoes, you HAVE to grow Sun Gold cherry, they will definitely turn you into a tomato lover! They are about as far from "sour" as you can get, and sold at Home Depot, Lowe's and Walmart during tomato plant season. They definitely "trellis"---hope your trellis is 12 feet high LOL

I would also recommend for the 2nd one growing Big Beef or Brandy Boy, also available at Big Box stores and although hybrid, have rich heirloom flavor. They are also nice big slicers for sandwiches.

Give Sun Gold a try. Amazingly sweet, not mealy, and no strong tomato taste.

Just like me. My introduction to tomatoes as a child was not a pleasant one. Store bought tomatoes just didn't get it. After being introduced to heirloom varieties you couldn't keep me away from them. For a cherry Sungold is an excellent variety to try, just bring a chair with when your first ripe one's appear as you will be there awhile.:)

Another vote for SunGold. More of a fruit than a tomato taste-wise.

What I'm reading is that its a texture problem: mealiness and the gel around seed having the texture of "snot." If you think about it, cooking can eliminate both. Cooking doesn't change the flavor, it enhances and concentrates it.

First suggestion: quarter the raw tomatoes and remove all the seeds and gel.

I'm lost for a variety, but can someone suggest a variety or two that tends to run more crisp, with few seeds and sweet flavor? Paste types are low on seed but can be high on mealiness. What else??

The suggested tomato Sun Gold Cherry and Brandy Boy or Momotaro will fill your garden this year. Plus if you have a local farmers market, stop by in late July/Aug try some of the fresh heirloom tomatoes that will appear at that time. You'll have a better understanding what you like and dislike in a fresh tomato. So that in 2010 you'll have more choices of what to grow in your garden. ;)

To tell you the truth, I was not a tomato lover until I started growing then I got in love. Store tomatoes is all I new, but thats a entirely different animal. when I started, I grew Burpees Supersteak and was impressed!. If you are looking for tomatoes that do not taste like one, go with the Heirloom ones like Black Krim, Cherokee, Brandywine/boy. They are very sweet/not like tomato taste. I grew this for the first time this year (2008) and I had people saying "well, its good, different, but does not taste like tomato". So there you have it.

I agree that an oxheart variety might do the trick, as they tend to be meatier and have less seeds and gel. Anna Russian comes to mind, but there are many others. Also, if you've never eaten a home-grown tomato, that might be 90% of the problem right there.

It's hard to beat sungold for flavor. It starts early and keeps on producing. It's one of a few that I am still picking. However it is prone to splitting so storing them and giving them away is a bit of a problem. And they aren't the best for sauce because of their tiny size.

I would try a red tomato too. If you are basing your dislike on store bought tomatoes I think you will be surprised. Tomatoes are one of a few vegetables that taste a LOT better when home grown and allowed to ripen on the vine in warm weather.

I didn't like tomatoes until I grew them myslef. I am still not very fond of store bought tomatoes.

I'm sure that only eating store-bought tomatoes is definately the problem. I HATE store-bought tomatoes but LOVE the Brandy Boys (or any other, for that matter) that were grown in my garden. Try home-grown tomatoes and I know you will taste the difference!

With all of the votes on here for SunGold, I had to make a recommendation. I've grown both SunGold and a similar recent addition to Johnny's catalog called Solid Gold F1. It's actually a golden grape tomato rather than a cherry that's even a bit sweeter and slightly more productive.

All SunGold enthusiasts should be adding this tomato to their list for next year.

Until last year I couldn't stand cherry tomatoes and yet decided to grow Black Cherry as many recommended them. Wow, what a flavor! Tried them on everyone I knew at the Elks lodge and they all raved about the unique taste and texture(firm and berrylike). They're worth a try to say the least and yes, they are an indeterminate.

I second the fact that you hate store bought tomatoes (because they suck). I hated cauliflower until last summer. Now I literally dream about it. It's like the stuff you get in the supermarket isn't even the same species as the homegrown stuff.

I've heard good things about sungold too, and am growing them for the first time this year. I'd also recommend a black tomato (anything with black in the name). So far, I think those are the most flavorful-- and the farthest away from supermarket tomatoes.

Everyone raves about the taste of NAR..I wasn't impressed
too sweet for me. Kellogg's Breakfast..another disappointment.. I know that most orange maters have a lower concentration of acid and more sugar,,but I had to try them.

I prefer a balance of acid and flavor..my new Fav is German Red strawberry..very meaty..and a good balance of acid and good ol tomato flavor..not to mention huge maters..crack free.

By now you have surely planted your garden but....

If you want a different flavor, you've got to try Cherokee Purple, Black Krim, Old German or Bradywine. Arkansas Travelers are easy to grow, medium size and wonderful flavor.

Homegrown tomatoes are not "mealy" nor do they have "gel", not if they are ripe. I refuse to eat tomatoes from the time I get the last one off the vine (usually Thanksgiving week) until I get my first ripe one (unless I find a locally grown one, first!).

The easiest to care for tomato I've ever grown is Green Zebra, they taste great, are small in size, beautiful yellow and green color. They rarely split from too much rain, either.

Since you are growing them for others to eat, you could really WOW them with an Old German or Cherokee Purple. All of these I mentioned,(besides the AR Traveler) have beautiful unique colors, that you don't find in the grocery store, (orange and purples) and smokey flavors.

Beware though, one of my Old German's last year was over 14 feet tall!
