When do you start Tomatoes & Peppers
Comments (2)I started eggplants and peppers last week, and now more than half of them are up. Last year I waited too long to start them and so did not get as many peppers as I wanted, especially with the cold, dark, wet summer we had. My best pepper performer last year was Alma Paprika, which made nice thick-walled sweet peppers even when they were still in the white stage. I'm growing a lot more of them this year, plus trying a bunch of others that are more short-season than I've grown before. I'll start the tomatoes towards the end of the month....See MoreWhen do you start your seeds indoors?
Comments (4)Here is a good site to look at: http://www.andersonseedandgarden.com/ They will also send you a handout with all the dates if you ask. Some other seed stores might have the same. I am starting my perennials right now and will start some cold weather stuff shortly (broccoli, Spinach, and Lettuce). Sometime mid to end of Jan. I will do Delphs, Snaps and Statice. Mid to end of Feb. Tomatoes, Peppers, Grasses, Millets, Herbs, Campanula, Gomphrena. Mid to end Mar. Cuccumber, Squash, Melons, Pumpkins. Mid April Celosia. Direct seed: March spinach, lettuce, radish, onions, carrots, peas, larkspur, bells of ireland and nigella. April celery, more lettuce, carrots and glads. May beans, zinnas, sunflowers, amaranthus, safflower, calendula, cosmos, second round of cold weather stuff (see March above). I hope that helps. You may start a little sooner in SLC than I do here in Cache Valley. Good luck growing!! Bryan...See MoreDFW - When do you start tomato seeds?
Comments (7)Wow, txtomato. That seems early, but my memory is quite foggy. Are you in the Dallas area? I forgot when I put DFW in my post that not everyone realizes that means Dallas/Ft. Worth. At least it's better than calling it "The Metroplex" That can rally draw blank stares from people out of the area!...See MoreWhat do you do if you start your tomato seedlings inside too early?
Comments (13)Rooting a cutting is a good way to go or.......just plant your large plant very deeply. Either straight down if the soil has warmed up for the season or lay the tomato plant sideways in a small shallow trench and cover with your garden soil. Roots will form all along the stem underground and give you a larger root system to support the plant better. I ALWAYS start tomatoes early and plant them deep. I have multiple light indoors to support their needs before I bring them outside though....See Moreslo_garden
