Can anyone tell me about my asian pottery? xpost from decorating

I've had this piece for about 25 years and never known anything about it. It came from my friend's ex-husband's grandmother's basement. So it has at least a little age to it, but otherwise I know nothing about it. I've always thought it was pretty. It is about a foot and a half in diameter and 6 inches tall.

Can anybody help? The design is incised slightly and is both more glossy and less glossy in sheen. It has a different design on each side, a continuous design around the bottom, and a faint maker's mark on the bottom.

I posted this to the home decorating forum as well because I post fairly regularly there. Does anyone know if this has any value or where/when it might be from? Thanks for anything you can tell me!

I believe it's a gold fish bowl, but I'm afraid I can't tell you more than that. I'm not very good as far as Asian antiques are concerned. Hopefully someone else will jump in here with some info for you. mfrog

mfrog, thanks for your reply. I've been doing google images searches and hadn't come up with much with similar shapes to mine. Someone on the decorating forum thought it might be a famille style. The closest I've been able to come to mine is a famille brush washer bowl.

I was wrong about the size. I pulled out the tape measure, and it's 12" across, 6" tall.

Any other info or suggestions appreciated!

Hmmmmm....I may be eating my words.....those dove tails look like they could be hand done. And the brasses could be old....they show signs of wear/polish. What is the distance between the screw holes...on center? The marking on the back mean nothing as far as dating or origin...nor does that previously glued on label. There is too much stain on the top to really say much about the wood....but the inside of the drawer, where the pull goes shows a cherry color. Mo matter what it is....new, old, reopro whatever.....it is well worth $200!!! I am puzzled by the lack or grain figure in the top.

So.....they are not "pottery"...that is unglazed bisque?....not that composition stuff? But if they are soap stone they would have to be carved individually and would not be patent pending. Wonder if the patent was granted? There ought to be a way to do a search on the artist's name at the patent office....probably available on line. Because they say patent pending I am sure they are not one of a kind. Perhaps they are the babies from a movie? Or a children's book? Sorry....never seen anything like them. Linda C

It's fairly typical for homes in Virginia from that period. Stylistically, it's a two-story central hall plan vernacular farmhouse. It's not one of the fancy named styles, but then again, most older houses are vernacular, that is, not slavish renditions of a formal style. There have been some changes over time with your house; I am guessing the chamfered porch posts date from somewhat later. I can't see much more from the photo, but the central passage plan is common to that era and area. Sometimes it is erroneously called an "I House," but central hall is correct. It's a very attractive home and we'd love to see more photos, including any interior details.

It's Franklin-type stove. I grew up in house with one and it was not painted white. Before you fire it, make sure the white paint can take the heat. To my eyes (from only the Craig's ad pics) it looks like it was painted and is now, in its present condition, only a decorative accessory. However, you might be able to take any non-high temp paint off, and rehabilitate it. Although it has doors, it is not a modern air-tight woodstove, so it's essentially a free standing fireplace. You will have to take special care that it is installed safely. The best place for it would be in a fireplace hearth, perhaps with extra floor protection front. You may be able to see manufacturer's name or mark once you look it over carefully. I have a copy of a book on cast iron fire appliances made in the Troy and Albany NY area, if anything like that turns up on your examination, I'd be glad to look it up. There is also an outstanding collection of cast iron stoves at the Albany (NY) Museum of History and Art. The area was an early cradle of the stove industry and the stoves from here were shipped all over the world. I once stayed at a very remote farm high in the Andes in Peru, and was totally flabbergasted to find my breakfast being cooked on an enormous Stewart range, made in Troy c 1880. HTH, Molly~

I always thought brush washes were quite a bit smaller than that. I google imaged "famille rose fish bowl" there are quite a few on there, but I couldn't find one like yours.
Do you have an antiques dealer or auction house that deals in Asian Antiques near to you? Truly good Asian antiques are doing really well right now, so it would be a good time to figure it out.
Sometimes it takes a long time to figure out exactly what you have. I have a vase that I've had for a number of years, every once in a while I try to do some more research. One day I will figure it out, maybe....;-) mfrog

mfrog, thanks for your reply. I didn't look at the size when I googled brush washes, so you're probably right. When I looked at fish bowls, none were the same shape as mine. Several brush washes were the same shape as mine.

Yes, I'll try to find an asian antiques dealer. I'm just outside of DC, so I'm pretty sure there are some nearby. I'd actually be much more surprised to find out that this IS worth something than I would be to find out it's worth little. It would be fun to know for sure though.

It strikes me as being a quite modern design for an Asian piece, and I seriously doubt it's antique. It's pretty, however, but assume it's just a decorative bowl. The bottom indicates it has been finished off on a grinder, and looks hand decorated.
