Robin, do you perhaps mean Roman Candle, which is pure yellow? I can't find any reference using the name Yellow Candle, but Roman Candle is yellow and there are a number of places where you can purchase seeds as you can see from the Google link below.

I did check the latest SSE Yearbook and no listing for Yellow Candle.

I really think that Roman Candle might be what you're looking for.

Seeds of Diverity Canada unfortunately does have a lot of wrong information about varieties and their names, but in the case where they say it's not in the US gene bank or the Canadian one and I find nothing by Googling and I did look in a 1990 SSE Yearbook as well, then I think one has to tentatively assume that it is indeed extinct.

Could Roman Candle be the same as Yellow Candle? It's possible. Why don't you describe for me what Yellow Candle looks like, both plants and fruits, and then I'll tell you what Roman Candle is like.

And just b'c I'm curious, where did you find out about it and what traits does it have that captured your interest?

I certainly appreciate your interest in my post. I originally spotted the name of Yellow Candle on the Seeds of Diversity web list. It is nearly Christmas, and I liked the name, so I wanted to look into it. Well, I found a description that made me even more interested. Seemingly it is rather small and can be grown in a pot--maybe inside the house at Christmas! This description is from the Long Island Seed Project:
YELLOW CANDLE-dwarf HR, 10" ht., spreading 14", clusters of 1 1/2"-2" long oval shape to elongate plum, golden color, liseed selected from Goldie F2 generation.

I believe it is merely a description, not an affirmation of having it, so I will continue to look.

I have also been getting into preservation, so if it is still available, I'd like to work with it.

Ken Ettlinger used to sell seeds but his LI Project has taken him in a different direction and he hasn't sold seeds in many years as far as I know.

I don't know how much more help I can be, so do let us know if you do find it. ( smile)

You can contact Ken Ettlinger via the email contact at the Long Island Seed Project's Web site. Ken is responsive to his emails, but sometimes takes a while I guess due to his other involvements. He does make his seeds available, though. And he does a great job in preserving diversity.

****''Interesting Bill b/c I was at his website this past summer looking at the info he had written about Brandywine and Quisenberry and I didn't see any mention of obtaining seeds from him, but I admit that I didn't look at the link above and maybe things have changed.

Ken was one of the earliest folks around, along with George Gleckler and Jan Blum to offer seeds for sale back in the late 80's up to I can't remember when, and had quite a nice list at the time.

Robin, it's certainly worth a try if your heart is set on Yellow Candle. ( smile)

I contacted Ken because I thought maybe he had a true pure line of Brandywine he had gotten from Ben Quisenberry back in the early 1980s. But that's another story not related to this thread ... other than to say ...
