In Georgia just over the stateline from FL there is a little town there that was made famous by a Ray Stevens song, The Shriners Convention. Hahira is the name of the town . I have been there many times to visit relatives who live there and I can tell you they are proud of it too.

In PA they do postmarks and bumper stickers for the towns of Intercourse and Bird-In-Hand.

Ottawa and Toronto are near each other in Kansas.

Upstate NY has Cairo (pronounced Care-Oh by the locals), Rome, Monticello and Florida.

The Cairo in Georgia is pronounced Karo, like the syrup.

There's a town (near when I have family in New Hampshire) named Dummer. Imagine applying to college if you were the validictorian of Dummer high.

One town over from where I grew up in RI was a town called North Providence (that doesn't sound funny, I'm getting to it...wait:) Directly under the "Welcome to North Providence" sign was a "Dead End" sign. There's also a lighthouse in Rhode Island (a big makeout hangout once upon a time) on an area called Beaver Tail.

During my 30 year employment with New Jersey Bell I spent several years as an operator in directory assistance.

As the service was still free, and we had to be polite and respectable to ANYONE who called, it was a favorite place for children to call and torment an adult.

Most of the listings didn't exist, but we were required to take the requests politely anyway. And I was sometimes surprised with the results.

The one that sticks in my mind the most would be the "Lively Funeral Home" which I THINK was somewhere in Burlington County!

I live in Roanoke, Virginia, but its original name was BIG LICK. According to legend, there are many natural salt licks near the springs in this area and this was a prime hunting spot because of it.

Yes, there is of course a town name of Cheesville here in Wisconsin, there is also Spread Eagle, Superior, Spooner and Embarrass. Most of our names are odd though- Native American names like Waupaca, Kewaunee, Kakauna, Manitowoc, Minocqua.

Okay, I'll chime in with my favorties. In MN we have two towns relatively close together, Climax MN and Fertile MN. Honest to God, there once was a headline in a local paper that read "Fertile woman dies in Climax". There is another town here called Taconite, but we call it Taco Nite.
I went to school with a girl named Crystal Ball, and one named Heidi Ho. My mom went to school with a guy named Ivan Noflitch (say it fast). My sister worked with a guy named Dick Grabber.
In Hebden Bridge, England there is a street called Hanging Royd Road.

Well, here's one for ya, which I always wished I took a photo of and sent in to National Lampoon. In our town there was a Gentlemans club called "Bottoms Up" It used to be in a pretty prominant part of the town and behind it was a public parking lot. Above the back door of the club was a large sign which read...

Hey, I married a handsome fella from Happy, Texas...the town without a frown. :) Once I was complaining to my father in law about describing where Happy was to 'foreigners' (anyone not from the panhandle)...I explained I was telling folks Happy was between Amarillo and Lubbock. He said I should tell them it is between Wayside and Arney and let them figure it out.

Once had a client named Turnipseed and knew a dentist named Dr. Payne.

Okay, I must chime in here. When folks want to see my gardens and ask me how to get there, I have to tell them that the street I'm on is between Dog Leg & Peters, ie: "Dog Leg Road" and "Peters Pike". Usually gets a laugh.

Before we moved to Maine, my husband's job brought us to Omak, Washington. We moved into the small town with a population of about three thousand. I knew I was in for many a bad hair day at the town beauty shop called the 'Wak and Yak'. The barber had his chair set up in the feed store....if anything was wrong with your car it could be serviced at 'Lube and a Late'.

One day he was on the way to the washroom when a teacher who didn't know him took offense to him being in the hall. teacher- "What's your name?" kid- "Dean Martin" teacher-"And I'm Jerry Lewis. Go to the office!" Poor Dean just headed to the office,too scared to say anything.

Unusual town names are nothing new in Upstate NY, either. There are so many unusual names/pronunciations that one radio station here made up their own spoof song, based on Billy Joel's "We Didn't Start The Fire," called "We Didn't Say Your Town Right."

How about Saucier (pronounced so-shay) and Gautier (that's right go-shay) on the Gulf coast in Mississippi.

There was a new weatherman on the radio one morning, I knew he was new because he pronounced Saucier as sauce-c-er.

Near by is Pass Christian Mississippi. The locals of course pronounce it Pass Chris-t-an, or mostly they just call it "the pass".

Excuse me for resurrecting this folks, but I did a search for "Stunted," and for whatever reason this was the only message that came up! I read through and have laughed and laughed.

Here is a funny contibution from me. My mother swears that her uncle, my grandfather's youngest brother, had ten children. The last two were a girl named Nina (pronounced NINE uh) and a boy named Tenny. When we accused her of making it up, she insists she had cousins named Nina and Tenny!

Here in my county there is a community called Ketchuptown. In the upstate of SC, a friend of mine came from Possum Kingdom. When I lived in Clemson, SC, I took a shortcut through a place called Slabtown.

Funniest, maybe? A community here in eastern called Hellhole Swamp. They have a festival each year and crown a Miss Hellhole Swamp. It was just last week or so: check out the link!
