BBQ smoke from neighbor coming into my apartment.
Comments (7)If it had just been the cooking odor, I'd have said there wasn't much you could do. But actual smoke is another matter. There are health concerns for one thing. For another, if there's that much smoke that it is getting into apartments several units away from the one producing the smoke, then I have to wonder about the smoke alarms in that unit. The tenant must have disabled them in order to cook this way. I'd play a little dumb about which unit it is. Contact the management or landlord and tell them that smoke is getting into your unit, and how often--daily, 4-5 times a week. You are concerned about 2 things--how this is affecting your health is one. And the second is that you are worried that so much smoke is being produced and no smoke detector is going off. Make it clear that you think something is wrong with the smoke alarms and that you are worried that in case of a real fire, the alarms won't sound. That should bring management out in a hurry. Most leases have clauses about maintaining an operating smoke detector in the apartment, so this other tenant could well be in violation of the lease. And while I don't usually care if other tenants follow all the rules or not, in this case, it directly impacts your safety and I think you have a right to complain....See MoreNo Smoking Allowed or Allowed?
Comments (14)Under no circumstances would anyone be allowed to smoke in my home. DITTO I don't know anyone who smokes any more....seriously...I don't know anyone who does. DITTO Long ago, when I did know people who smoked, I asked them to smoke outside and provided them with recepticals for their ashes & butts. Inevitably, I'd still find butts littered on the patio. YUCK! Several years ago I got friendly with a fellow cub scout mom and was thinking of inviting her over but then found out she smoked. That nixed that. At this point, I would not knowingly invite anyone into my home who smokes. Fortunately none of my relatives smoke. But I'm so totally disgusted by the smell of it and the nastiness in general of cigarettes, no way NO WAY would I allow someone to smoke in my house. And if they did want to smoke, in addition to sending them out to the back yard, I'd never invite them over again. People who smoke smell like smoke. So even if they go outside, they come back in with the smell on their clothes and I'd be able to smell it long after they leave. Sorry if I've offended any smokers out there but that's the reality of it. And like Iowa, Houston has smoking ordinances that prohibit smoking in most indoor places including restaurants, bars, sports arenas, etc. Most or all companies/office buildings prohibit smoking as well. I think your neighbor's mistake was getting angry and argumentative over it. He should have simply asked her to go outside and firmly requested that she not light up in his house. No need to go into the personal issues, but since they are siblings, there might very well be deeper issues that got tangled in....See MoreMy downstair neighbor complains about walking.
Comments (9)bossyvossy is on to something. Maybe it is time to change out the carpet & padding. I would take that suggestion. Honestly, when I've lived in apartments, people walking around didn't bother me. It was actually a bit comforting when I was a new momma & my husband was out of town or at work nights. It was nice to know someone was upstairs. I have a two story house now, and sometimes I hear the kids upstairs walking around. Of course that doesn't bother me. The ONLY thing that bothered me with someone living above me in an apt. was a guy that used to play his guitar really loud. Just any loud music. Not even the tv bothered me if I ever heard it. Just the boom, boom, boom of music. Luckily this younger generation would rather listen to music, watch tv/laptops/tablets/phones with earphones. Maybe your neighbors just need to rent/buy a house or something if they can't get used to hearing someone walking above them. You never know what bothers people. You could cook hamburgers and they might complain about the smell.....hang in there :)...See MoreDownstairs neighbor complaining about my 2 year old kid noise
Comments (1)If you hadn't posted Dutchess I would have sworn you live in my complex, I'm in Ulster.. I'm in a downstairs apartment, there have been 4 other people above me, one was actually evicted because the managers wife was here one night and the gal upstairs had her niece & nephew over 8 & 10 yr's old, my friend was shocked over the noise I heard and I told her it was like that every time the kids were here, well my friend ran up the stairs and told her to cut the crap and the tenant lied to her face and said I was making it all, the noise did continue an finally a month later she was given notice. I now have a couple over me that are so loud it drives me insane, they dont walk they stomp and slam doors, drop stuff all the time, now there is a new owner here with a complete different attitude, which is, if you dont like it move, I'm 70 and unable to afford to relocate so I'm stuck here in my living hell. Your neighbors probably won't stop harassing you and the landlord probably won't do a thing. Try putting down some extra carpets, if you & your son have on shoes maybe take them off, every little thing helps and it will be better for your piece of mind. Ask to be put on a list for a down stairs apartment or maybe plan on moving to a better place in the future. Best of luck....See Morebud_wi
