What does 'DH' mean?

Did a search and didn't find a list of abbreviations. I see this used a lot and can't figure it out. People use it in reference to their spouse I believe. Help a brother out.

I understand it to mean "Dear Husband" but I have also thought some posters in particular posts mean "D@nm Husband".

It stands for dreadful husband. Whenever the abbr. is used here on gardenweb, I automatically think of it as a cry for help.

I can't provide a very extensive answer, but in a nut shell an easment gives a 'right' [hence, right-of-way] to a specific entity for a specific use-- for instance, a utility company easement gives them the right to build and maintain lines, but not to host a company picnic. If the pool deck were over a power line easment, the power company could destroy it to fix/expand the line. If it were on an access easement, it would have to go if it interfeared with people's access. If there is a recorded easement here, there should be some specifics: how wide, who owns the easement and for what purpose, etc. Anything interfearing with this purpose is in violation, and may have to be removed at the homeowner's expense, and the homeowner would not need to be compensated. To cover their own exposure, the owner of the easment would need to keep any damages resonable, and do their best to mitigate them by [for instance] not removing a tree if they could acheive their goals by pruning it. So a lot depends on the language granting this easement. If the fence is on your property line, the easment probably allows you and the neighbor to maintain the fence, even if it means stepping over the actual line. But you probably can't get the pool deck removed unless or until it impacts that maintenence. It would be an issue for the courts, not the city bureaucrats. But there may be separate regulations about structural setbacks that would give you a bit more leverage. I have to admit, it would really bug me for the neighbor to have a deck beside this sort of fence if it gives them an eagle eye veiw into my yard. I might have to give them a bit of a show from time to time, just to discourage them from looking.

I didn't have to bring it up to the builder. My dh ran into her on the lot and she said the same thing to him. Apparently I misunderstood what she meant by cleaning. According to dh.....we are to clean it up as if we were moving in right before the hardwood floor guy comes in to sand and refinish the floors. We have to clean it really well so dust and dirt don't get in the finish. This makes sense to me and I agree with this. It will be professionally cleaned in the end. Glad I didn't say anything! I know it seems crazy to not want to do the final clean after all of the heavy lifting we have done. Not doing it was just something I was looking forward to. I'm so sick of cleaning that I don't think I would do as good of a job at it as the pro's. I'm sure I would rush the job and regret it. If I ever build again I will definitely pay for all of the clean-up!!!! That might be my new advice to the newbie builders.

Don't give him cold shoulder. Lay it all out. Specifically. I don't like it when you _____________ because I feel _____________ when that happens. Then tell him what you will do. Example. My 7 year old (yep, because that's how old your dh is acting!!) keeps not appreciating what I do for her. Not only that, but acting like a little brat prior to us doing fun stuff. I finally told her today that I am tired of feeling like this. I told her I cannot control what she does, but I can control how I react to it. So the next time she doesn't listen to me about eating in the living room or whatever, I'm not going to get all upset. We're just not going to do the fun stuff we had planned. Then I won't feel that she's taking advantage and martyr myself. End game. I think she got it. So, what will you do when DH does something like that? DH: I think your tattoos are hideous. You: I apologize for my husband. That was innappropriate to say to you, a guest in our home. Would you like to come with me to the patio for some tea? DH: Rush Limbaugh is an idiot, I don't see how any smart person could listen to him. You must be an idiot. You: It's obvious we have different opinions on this subject. Aren't politics a heated subject!! By the way, Aunt Jen, this is a lovely coffee cake. How did you make it so fluffy and light? By doing that, it takes the attention from him, lets him and everyone know that you won't stand for it, and lets him off without the humility of being kicked or told off. Just smile, and cut him off at the chase. Diffuse while in the heat of it, then when you get him alone have specific things to tell him, without anger or blame.

Grinch, who needs to mind her guy ... carefully. Sorry - big error! Inadvertent! Start over! Grinch, who needs to mind her gut ... carefully! Please - don't let your own stubbornness put you at risk! You need rest to facilitate healing, not the jiggle of travel to provide something of a PITA. Plus ... being under a head of emotional steam for at least a good portion of the trip. That doesn't facilitate healing, either. If it's not possible/appropriate to visit the doc, how about giving him/her a call, when hubby's handy, to ask about the wisdom of the proposed trip. If s/he gives the answer that you're hoping for, put hubby on the phone. Let her describe to him the criteria that one uses to identify a jackass. If the fifth wheel has to roll - can you find a spot to bunk with a friend? Motel? A shelter? Here's an idea .. Get a big bottle that can serve as a pill bottle. Get some little red cinnamon hearts (it's getting near Valentine's Day). Put a bunch into the bottle. Label it, "Common Sense". With some humourous instructions as to dosage. Invite hubby to go "on the pill". I hope that you can arrange some further relaxing time to promote that healing. ole joyful

These GWers are messing with your mind, Vandit! ;) 99% of the time DH is Dear Husband; if a rant or complaint thread, I imagine the Dear part being said through gritted teeth. Myself, I prefer to call mine PHH (PinHead Husband) in those situations.

Maire Cate, I'm with you on DW confusion (dishwasher or dear wife?) Another that throws me on Kitchens/Appliances: DD (dish drawers here, but Dear Daughter on my other forums).

Odd? Perhaps. Decades old, for sure. It way predates the world wide web. (Yes, there were online fora back in the days when a 30Mb hard drive was hot stuff.)

The main thing is that there are too many keystrokes in "husband". "Hubby", while liked by some, is awfully cutesy for others. "H" doesn't make for a good abbreviation. "DH" is the guy who is tolerant enough not to get between his wife and her "computer friends".

DS = dear son
DD = dear daughter
DS1 and DD3 are the oldest son and third oldest daughter...
However, DS15 and DD12 are (usually) the fifteen year old son and twelve year old daughter.

FIL or f-i-l is father-in-law.
MIL mother-in-law
SIL sister-in-law, usually.
BIL brother-in-law
DIL daughter-in-law
SIL becomes son-in-law in context.

SS could be sob sister, but is actually stainless steel, except when used by people who are contemplating soapstone and are just over typing it out all the time.

LMAO is laughing my a** off. :)

My DH pitched me giant attitude one night until I finally asked what the problem was. He pointed to our white board/reno management board where I had inadvertently written the term DH instead of his first name when I erased and re-wrote several of the lists. He thought DH meant Dumb Husband. Despite me showing him the real meaning online, he still, months later, doesn't believe me. Darn GW for making these abbreviations such an ingrained part of my life. :-)

Breezy, you tell him from me that I don't think he's dumb, just paranoid. In the 30+ years I've been online, "dear" is the only standard meaning I've come across (though some individuals mean it facetiously). Of course, that's in places women are more likely to hang out and converse in complete sentences with punctuation. There are some wild and woolly parts of the 'net which I can't vouch for.

The exact relationship of an in-law is not specified in the language, beyond the idea that in the law one is now considered to be closely related. In Scandinavian languages, among many others, there is a distinction for grandparents, whether they're father's mother or mother's mother, etc., which is nice so that they're not fighting over who gets to be called "Grandma". We have gender designations for niece and nephew, aunt and uncle, brother and sister, but not cousins. Etc. On the 'net, we don't seek to correct these vagaries of language, just employ them with the fewest keystrokes. :)

Breezygirl - my DH would crawl in a cave and hide if he saw me using these initials for the same reason your DH was upset and nothing that I would do would be able to coax him out of his cave. Good thing my kitchen remodel has a "his and her" cave in it!
I am still learning some of the other initials as well but getting the knack of it.
