Tomato Plant problem, Please Help!!

I noticed a few weeks ago that one or two stems of leaves were being covered with these miniscule black dots and other stems were fading into yellow-- I thought it was perhaps because they were older, but it is now affecting even the young leaves and has become pretty widespread. The leaves are then dying. I have been trying to clip the stems to curb the spread of whatever is going on, but it doesn't seem to help. I tried to look up other similar problems people were having, but it doesn't seem to be the same (I read something about a granular type thing... where the black rubs off, but this doesn't).

This plant is adopted from someone else who had left it behind to die, and it was doing great for about two months, and now this. Just some info... it's in a planter box, is indoors (as it is getting cold here) and is placed by a window that gets great afternoon sun.

PS... I believe these are celebrity tomatoes.

I have the same thing happening to my plants. I think it may a fungus disease. The stems and leaves on the lower part of the plant have irregular brown/black spot and the leave turn yellow, the stem turns yellow and then dies. I hope someone can help identify this.

If you use organic fertilizers they are not as likely to burn your plants as chemical fertilizers are Sorry to disagree but it is just as easy to OVER-fertilize with organics as it is with synthetics. tobaira - watering once a day is far too much water and your plants are showing the effects of excessive watering, poor drainage, and being root-bound. The end result is root death. Plus there are some signs of excessive nutrient burn as well. I also hope there are drain holes in those cups? It doesn't ake a special set up to bottom water - just set the cups in a couple of inches of water in the sink for 30 mins. or so. Top soil in a small container compacts and doesn't drain well so retains all that water, manure burns, and top watering creates shallow roots that die off quickly. I would re-pot those plants into larger cups with drain holes and shake off as much of the existing soil as possible when doing it. Put them in potting mix, not homemade soil. Cut back on watering by at least half. You will lose some of those leaves but the new growth should be good. Hope this helps. Dave

For your tomato, it looks like Flea Beetles, you can actually see one in the bottom-most picture you posted and the damage is typical of them. Treatment for Flea Beetles depends on your personal preference. For the non-organic route, I believe you can use Sevin insecticide - provided they are listed on the bottle, which I believe they are. Organic pesticides, on the other hand, I don't know of any for killing Flea Beetles - I'll defer to those with experience on the matter. I don't use any pesticides really, but if I had them, I'd just squish as many as I could find :) For your Basil, it kind of looks like it's got sunburn / windburn. Was it hardened off before putting it in full sun? For the cucumber... I'm guessing it's probably not warm enough yet for it to really take-off growing. It looks fine and pretty much like most of my seedlings. They always start-off slow and then try to conquer the garden in a matter of weeks. Good luck.

bettsyy, the bumps on the stems may be roots trying to form where the stem got wet, tomatoes will try to put out roots along the stem even above ground if the stem is wet enough... do you water the ground below the plant or the actual leaves? Also, if the yellow leaves are relatively spot-free, and they are the lowest leaves, they could just be dying off due to age and lack of sunlight down low on the plant... or they can be yellowing from overwatering. How is the soil you planted in and how have you been watering and have you had much rain?

I have heard of it happening to the bottom of the plant, but mine is all over; it didn't start at the bottom and work its way up. Also, the leaves don't always turn yellow; the two things are independent: usually the yellow leaves don't get the black spots and vice versa (at least that I have noticed so far). I actually have some pictures but I am not sure how to post them in here.

how small of black dots? That will help you determining from the links given.

Are individual spots getting larger over time or just more numerous?

Tiny black dots make me first think "bacterial spot" or "bacterial speck". Consider your location and weather conditions to help differeniate between the two. Septoria is a possibility as well.

Early Blight lesions (spots) generally get larger over time. That is why I asked above.

Depending on how the plant got infected determines where it shows up first especially in a planter.

Mine is more numerous. These spots didn't start showing up until about a month after I moved the plant indoors. The spots don't really do anything... they just spread to more leaves (don't get bigger, don't get more numerous on a leaf after they have appeared, just spread to more leaves/stems.

Also... they are very small... haven't appeared to affect any of the fruit. The spots do not have "halos" of yellow around them, and aren't as big as the spots pictured... very small. Can you tell me how to post pictures on here? I can show you what I am talking about.
