Comments (7)depending on your neighbors, you could also work out what time of day you've be most likely to use it, and then place it in whatever room they're not likely to use. My upstairs neighbor suddenly started making an odd, rhythmic noise on floor of her bedroom (directly over ours), and I knew it was some sort of exercise. She was doing it at 7:15 a.m. or something--we were already up, nearly dressed, and about to leave the bedroom to get the kids up, eat breakfast, leave for work. So while I could hear it, and it would have really bothered me if I were trying to fall asleep through it, I sure didn't give a fig at that time of day--that was the perfect place and time for her to do it. Her mom mentioned it briefly, and I said, "I've been wondering what that is! I knew it was exercise, but I could not for the life of me figure out what kind would make exactly THAT noise." and went on to say, "it's a perfect time of day; sure I can *hear* her, but I don't *mind*--she shouldn't stop, for heaven's sake!" I think she did anyway, and I've felt bad about it a little, because I honestly didn't mind--and she should be able to do as much in her own home as she can....See MoreHelp! Am I a Noisy Neighbor?
Comments (4)amymichelle, Is there any chance you might consider an elliptical machine to replace your treadmill? The problem with a treadmill is that it's higher impact, so every time your foot hits the machine it shakes the floor. You might as well be running on the floor. With an elliptical the movement is different, and there's no impact to shake the floor. In our apartment the floors are pretty soft. It's a single story apartment, so we don't have to worry about anyone above or below us, but when hubby walks by the sofa, I can feel the sofa shift with his weight (and he's not a huge guy either). We have a front loading washing machine, and when it hits the spin cycle the whole apartment shakes. My husband had to take down some knick-knack shelves in the computer room cuz the stuff would fall down when we did the laundry. And this is in a modular building. The laundry room and bedroom are in one module, the computer room and kitchen in the middle module, and the living room and my office area (formerly the dining area) are in the third module....yet I can feel a pretty strong vibration from the washing machine all the way out in the living room. However, I can't feel the elliptical machine unless I'm standing right next to it. It's deffinitely a different movement than an elliptical, but it's not too hard to get used to, you get just as good a workout IMO, and it's much easier on your knees, back, and neighbors. Just an idea....See MoreTrash 'shopping' and finding neat stuff
Comments (13)I wish we had a scheduled "trash" pickup day like that to get rid of large items. The city will only pick up appliances at the curb only if you call and arrange it. I often put large things at the curb and it isn't long before they are picked up by someone. Every night before garbage day people go up and down the streets in pickup trucks looking for metal and any other perceived "useable" items. LOL I cleaned out my basement and one guy came and took everything including old broom handles. Walking down my street a few years ago I came across a box that had all kinds of items in it. The woman had died and her family threw out some of her knick-knacks they didn't want. I picked up some "blue mountain pottery" figurine pieces which I sold for a good price at my yard sale and a few pieces I kept. My best friend's grandfather put his old unwanted fireplace andirons at the curb of his house more than 50 years ago and my brother David picked them up and brought them home where they have been used the fireplace in this house ever since. I love them and would never get rid of them. When my friend and her parents moved in with their grandfather the only thing I remember their fireplace being used for was for holding their toys box. LOL I wonder if old grandpa closed off his fireplace because a new baby was coming into the house and tossed out the andirons because he wouldn't need them. I see good stuff at the curb on my walks or after yard sales and I wished I knew how to refurbish or refinish. My sister was good at finding things and making them work in her house. Now that I think of it the old shutters that used to be on my house to frame the front door came from someone's garbage and I remember going out with my sister at night and taking them from someone's trash. She sanded and painted them black and they were good as new - something we would never have been able to afford back then. Anne...See MoreStanding desk in living room
Comments (8)I'd put the treadmill right alongside the window with the front of it facing the tiled wall. Then I'd lower the desk to its lowest position, and I'd install a rod holder on each wall, then make a curtain which can be put on a rod, which then sits in the rod holders, drawing the curtain across the area, hiding the treadmill behind it but leaving enough window there for viewing and the lights, etc. This would also give you extra wall space, i.e.: the curtain, for when you have guests, for extra seating or a table. Rather than move a treadmill ever time you have guests, just take the rod with the curtain on it out of a closet and put it up. You also, with this arrangement, have to know how the light streams into that area since you don't want glare hitting the computer screen while you're on the treadmill....See MoreLauren777
