Help with deciding which dishwasher - please

We are putting in a second kitchen in our basement. We made the mistake of installing a Frigidaire dishwasher in our main kitchen and I want to move it to the basement kitchen and purchase a new dishwasher for upstairs.

I had pretty much decided on dish drawers. I think they will be very helpful to get one loaded and going with dishes and then load both after dinner. I often can't fit everything in after cooking a meal, especially since there are always a few glasses, plates, etc before I even begin.

I am sick of my Frigidaire not cleaning well and I don't want problems with leaking (wood floors) or too much noise. So, will the dish drawers do all that I hope, or should I forget that and get a Bosch or something similar?

Another consideration is I don't want a long running cycle.

If you vote for dish drawers, which kind???

The people I know who have the drawers say they do not hold a lot. I, too, am looking to purchase a D.W. I have had my KitchenAid for 12 years and never had a problem. Will miss it. I will most likely get the new K.A. with the cutlery drawer (like miele) which also has the basket too. Alot of my friends have the Miele but I am partial to the K.A. Hope this helps!!!!

You will probably consider any of the newer DWs to have a longer running cycle. It's part of the quieter and more energy efficient trade-off. I have a pair of Bosch DWs and would buy them again. We usually run the light cycle (about 76-82 minutes). A rinse only cycle is 11, normal load is about 110-120. I've never done a heavier load. I have run a quick wash a couple of times -- that is wash only and no drying cycle. It is about 30 minutes.

As quiet as they are (completely silent suring the drying time), I don't' really pay any attention to how long they are running. Is that your concern or do you need a fast turn around? I doubt the drawers are faster for similar cycles -- I can't think of any I have seen that are less than an hour plus.

I can't help you much as far as drawers go. I wasn't convinced on them, and even less so when I started seeing leak issues. In addition to running a quick cycle, you could look for a top rack only cycle and run that when you need it.

Personally, I like having the height of the tall tub and the ability to raise or lower my top rack so that I can fit larger items in when I need to. While the drawers have a certain appeal, that is something you can never do with them and iot seems the leaks are worst with putting in large items that may press on a seal. I think the drawers would have been perfect for my parents though.

DChall - they are actually more expensive than your standard rider. In my opinion they are so much nicer. I've only used commercial grade, (Scag, kubota, gravely) so not sure if it applies to home owner versions, but the blade speeds are so much higher allowing you to cut at a much faster pace without clumping or bogging the engine. They are also faster. You can make much tighter maneuvers around different landscaping shapes. In some areas I've used the ability to slide the side of the deck in unaccessible areas or under things. The biggest plus for me is the ability to run straight lines back and forth without having to use a brake and stop, change gears, back up, brake, change gears, forward, possible reverse again to line up, and then go back. With a zero turn, when you are at the end of your pass you spin around and keep going. ...I can probably cut a lawn in 1/4 the time than a typical lawn tractor, and get every last blade. That was my experience when I use to do real estate management. After using zero turns, I said I would NEVER use a regular mower again. ...here I am with a craftsman 42" lawn tractor. :-/ ..old owners left it in the deal when I bought the house. One of the appliance folk can probably say with more certainty than I could but the model you chose looks like the Optima I had in my apartment, which was a great, great dw. I have a 10 y.o. Incognito though it dries very well. I've never opened the door. Here's what Miele says about how the drying system works -- it is not heated drying and requires no energy usage. "Most Miele dishwashers employ an advanced drying system that draws room temperature air through a port at the bottom of the appliance. This air is disbursed through special channels around the exterior dishwasher cavity and allows the interior water particles to condense against the walls of the dishwasher. During this process no external air is ever introduced inside of the dishwasher. This provides the most effective and hygienic drying possible." The reason the dishes get dryer on Saniwash is because that water is very hot and, provided the dw is fairly full, the condensation is quite complete. I have Ikea cabinets in the laundry room so I'm aware of precautions with those. Their plinth board in there is starting to peel though the cabinets are doing fine. I would just be aware and make adjustments needed. The DW does come with a front piece that is contiguous with the toe kick in my kitchen but that would depend on which Ikea cabinets are being used and how they are being installed. Crystal looks like a good choice to me.

I have a KA, not sure of the model number off the top of my head, but I am extremely happy with it. It is their basic model with only a heavy and normal cycle. I can also choose extra heat in the wash cycle, and whether to heat dry or not. It has a stainless interior, and also comes with stainless exterior if you want. I got basic white because I am not enchanted with stainless appliances. I was tired of the unreliability of many dishwashers that have all the bells and whistles, and found I only used a couple of the cycles anyway. This has been the best one I've used, and was right around the price range you mentioned. My dishes come out totally clean. I don't find it to be particularly noisy. It sounds like a dishwasher. What is location? I can make recommendations if interested. New Heat Pump System Here is my general spec sheet for new system. both outside and inside units should be replaced to have a properly matched system. 15 SEER, 12.5+ EER, 9 HSPF best matching VS air handler full BTUs in both cooling and heating for your rated size R-410a refrigerant(same as Puron) scroll compressor preferred electronic demand defrost preferred thermostat with "dehumidify on demand" feature staged backup heat strips new and correctly sized refrigerant lineset 10 yr warranty on parts and compressor you want a thorough inspection of your ductwork system. size, overall condition, supply and return lines, insulation qualities, leak test, etc. any hot/cold spot issues in your home should be addressed. My personal recommendation is Trane/AmStd and Carrier/Bryant. Depending on your location, I would not purchase a new system that did not have electronic demand defrost. I would not have any of the brands other than Trane you are considering. IMO

I've never had a problem with my DishDrawer, which is now four years old. That being said, they're not for everyone's lifestyle.

We just got the Fisher Paykel dish drawers about a month ago. We've found that for a lot of the kind of cooking we do -- make a messy meal for two people, get a lot of pots dirty, a few wine glasses and a bunch of plates -- we can usually fit quite a bit more stuff in the two drawers than we could fit in the traditional dishwasher it replaced. Plus, we can put the pots on a heavy duty cycle, and not waste electricity by using the same heavy duty cycle for the glasses and stuff.

There are a bunch of cycles, going from I think under 30 minutes long to about two hours. For things like wine glasses, they come out clean in the shortest cycle. The drawers overall do a much better job of cleaning than our old GE did. It's also nice to be able to run a small, single-drawer load when we need to, rather than waiting to fill up the whole dishwasher, especially for food that will harden and get stuck if we leave it.

Loading the drawers is a lot more pleasant. Neither of us dreads unloading the dishwasher - dishes used to sit in the old one until we absolutely had to remove them.

Obviously we haven't had them long enough to be able to speak to reliability, but we personally are pretty psyched so far.

Hi..we've had a Miele Diamante for three months now and I'd never go back...before this I had found dishwashers noisy and pretty useless as I ended up doing half the stuff by hand anyway. This is so quiet that i can run it anytime so the longer running cycle has not been an issue...plus the stuff is really clean [I sound like an ad]
What I do suggest though crazy as it sounds is that you take a bunch of dishes to the store and see which one suits you. I couldn't make up my mind between the bosch and the Miele till I did that and it was obvious that with the conformation of my dishes and type of cooking I do the Miele was the best choice. As an added bonus it takes double the stuff of my old maytag.
We also looked at the dishdrawers but the Miele won out.
