Teapot identification

Hello I found this and another interesting teapot at an estate sale. I would like help identifying it. I do know that the stamp on the bottom is the the royal coat of arms, but I don't know the pattern or age of the teapot. The other is covered in characters and there is no identifying marks on the bottom. The teapot is unglazed on the outside and glazed on the interior.

Neither look familiar. Photos of the marks on the base. I'm not sure what is meant by "royal coat of arms", so will definitely need pics. mfrog

Gardengal knows what it is that I am saying. I really don't think that it is all about number crunching and techno designing that people seem to think I am preaching. I know Mohave read that into my posts many times and now I think you might be, Tony. I believe it is just the opposite. Rather than taking the artistic expression out of the design process to come up with a technogarden, I am pointing out that artistic expression is an extremely important means toward addressing your needs. Many of you see the artistic expression as the end where I see it as the mechanism rather than the result. To address Tony's need: "I want the space I am in to be purposeless, functionless and to call my enjoyment of the birds, the buds and the burgeoning life" Function: a purposeless space Form: could be anything as long as it serves no purpose But wait, we want to enjoy birds and buds (is that legal in Canada?) So, we know of a two basic functions. Enjoying birds and buds. What do you need to do that? Birds and buds need habitat, so that will take a form. In order to enjoy birds, one needs to see and/or hear them, these have physical requirements last time I checked. Depending what Tony means by enjoying "buds" , he'll need a garden (flowers), or maybe a table (Budweiser beer), or perhaps a little privacy (weed). I suspect it is the first bud definition, but in any case there are physical requirements (also known as form). Now it seems that the problem is in understanding that creativity and artistic expression is actually allowed and encouraged in developing these forms. The "form follows function phrase" seems to conjure images of a bunch of German guys with slide rules and lab coats trying to apply some minimalist sterile vision to these forms. The other thing that strikes me funny is that it seems people think that I am suggesting that they switch from doing it "the other way" to the "form follows function" method. The truth is that every last one of us is developing form from functions. Even Tony in his purposeless garden is creating a form to address a need. What we identify as functions, how many we want to address head on, and how we weight them in terms of our values are all going to be different. Hopefully, they won't be too different than your clients. Does that make more sense?

I am getting things potted up for the swap. I am focusing on bringing a smaller number of larger trades this year. I stopped by a nursery to find some cheap pots and talked them into selling me some of their 6" square pots (probably about 1/2 gallon ones) for $.20 each. Last year Oakland Park had nice 4" ones for $.09 each, but they didn't carry them this year. So far I have rhubarb, chocolate mint, lemon balm, spiderwort, lamb's ear, evening primrose, Golden Tiara hosta, misc. var. hosta, and Michaelinsis daisy potted up into 1/2 gallon or larger pots. I also have quite a few small starts of Penny's Worth daylily, a nice little daylily with yellow flowers. It kind of looks like a miniature version of Happy Returns. I also have plenty of tomatoes. I have about 60 varieties started this year. Some I only have a few of, but many of them I will have extras of to bring to the swap. We will be potting up some other things to bring as well. We usually bring the dogs into Columbus with us when we visit. But I don't see how they will fit in the van with all of the plants. It looks like we will have to leave them with friends for the weekend. We are looking forward to seeing everyone on the 15th. James

Would help if you would post pictures of the rest of the set both from the sides and top. Although top is not 100% necessary. However that does not appear like Chinese or Japanese characters. Edited to add what did the shop claim that it was?

I think the scrolling is lettering. Is that do you think? Perhaps a University with an archeological department or large Museum involved with such digs could help identify the markings. I would look on the net for that info. Or try to contact language departments as well where someone can recognize the markings or know someone who could recognize them. It would be easy enough to send photos if you are able to get in touch someone. Good luck and post any results you find, if any. debra

The asian teapot I can't tell you anything about, other than I don't think it's very old, but I could be wrong! :) Sorry to not be much help to you, hopefully someone else will chime in here with more knowledge.

You were right about the mark looking like the royal coat of arms. Here's a quote from Kovels about the mark & similar.

"Marks like this, showing a lion and unicorn surrounding a shield topped with a crown, were used by many potteries. Although the mark looks similar to the Royal Coat of Arms of the United Kingdom, it is actually one of several similar marks used by potteries in the United States and Europe. This mark was used by the Potter's Co-operative Company on ironstone table and toilet ware from 1882 to c.1895. The co-operative was formed by a group of potters in East Liverpool, Ohio, in 1882 after a labor dispute. The group bought the Dresden Pottery Works and began making ironstone table and toilet ware. The pottery was bought by the Dresden Pottery Works in 1925. The company was out of business by 1927."

I entered carousel teapot chicken spout in Google :)

You have a Crown Devon Funfair Merry-Go- Round Carousel Teapot ...

or maybe a Melba Merry Go Round Novelty Tea Pot in a different colorway, or just horrible faded. If they were painted with that "cold glaze" that cookie jars often were, they fade in the dishwasher.

Thanks for getting back to me I will have to check those tea pots out, but the colour is not faded this one has like a opal or pink iridescent finish on it and is in really good shape again thanks for helping

Hi I looked at the link you sent again it is definitely the same tea pot almost identical but different colour this one has opal sheen finish to it thank you

You would have to check to see which color schemes that pot was made in.

The other pot ???? It's probably Chinese or Japanese, but that's all one can say about it. It's a pretty pot, and would look good with some black squarish cups.

Hi thank you for the update on the teapot. It must be, as you said maybe another color scheme for the same pot,it seemed easy once you had ID'd the pot, but I am still having trouble finding the same one, but I'm going to keep looking, and the other pot Would look wonderful with some black squarish cups :)
