This spoon is used for ...... what????

This spoon is not antique, old or valuable, but it is very peculiar in shape and design.

It is about 4 3/4" long, and the bowl seems to be sideways and has sort of square holes punched out on one end. On the back is says "Sepelia~Stainless Chromium Plate on Nickel Silver ~ Sheffield, England". Does anyone know what it is called, or what it would be used for?

The small, sideways ladles that I've seen were normally for serving a vinegarette, but the holes kinda ruin that purpose. To drain olives, maybe????

With the naked eye the scratches can't be seen. The mark is smaller than the tip of a straightpin, but I have magnified it, enlarged it, many times to get it to the point that you see above. So although it looks real bad, in reality it isn't. At first I couldn't find any mark, other than the Minerva head but somebody told me to look for a dot somewhere on the spoon, as the French are notorious for 'hiding' their marks. Lo and behold after much magnfying I found this. I just haven't quite figured out what exactly the picture is! The letters look like L & G with something in between them, so could be a maker mark, or a place mark.

A five piece place setting can be anything you choose! It depends on what you decide when you register your pattern. I chose luncheon knife and fork, salad/dessert fork, teaspoon and butter knife. I am currently helping a friend who chose a seafood fork as her 5th piece and wants soup spoons by cruising ebay for her. That piece which Sharon/chase calls a dinner spoon is often called a place spoon and more recently an oval soup spoon. I grew up calling it a dessert spoon...my mother would say "do you want to eat your soup with a dessert spoon or a soup spoon?" LOL! Here are some pieces in a pattern I am collecting for my grandndaughter. Left to right...tea spoon, afterdinner coffee spoon, creamed soup spoon, dessert or place spoon and boullion spoon. The regular place setting pieces I am missing are iced tea spoon, and demitasse. To answer the OP a soup spoon is larger than a teaspoon, whether it's oval or round and it's pretty inefficient eating soup with a teaspoon. Left out of the series, though are serving spoons....which is a whole "nother" thing. BTW the pattern shown is Gorham Wreath dating from 1910, I hope Meg doesn't grow up very fast as I love having it! Linda C

Spoon rack to what? Ideas?

I just saw a rack with spoons very similar yesterday at a local thrift store for $25!! I don't know if it will sell. I think it would be nicer as a spoon rack if it was painted and then prints of post cards decoupaged on it, ones that related to where the spoons are from. I think the spoons would make great key fobs too. Could the spoon holders support little shelves? It has a nice shape and could be converted to a nicknak shelf. Or black board paint to make a message center, ridges could hold the chalk. Kathy

You use a pot with loose tea....one spoon for each cup and one for the pot....then pour into each cup using the strainer. Ideally you should spoon the tea out from a tea caddy with a tea caddy spoon and have a matching bowl to rest your strainer in and have standing by a mote spoon in the event that any leaf gets into your cup and in case the spout to your tea pot gets clogged with wet leaves, you can use the pointy end of the mote spoon to clear the clog. And remember to say please and thank you and use your napkin and don't chew with your mouth open!

My guess: An olive spoon for fishing olives out of the pickling juice and dropping into a martini. The holes allow the juice to drain away.

Makes no sense to use a spoon for picking up olives when a fork would do as well and leave the juice behind.
It's for something you want a little bit of and that you want to drain the juice off of....and that comes in pieces bigger than the holes in the spoon, and the curved handle tells me it's something served in a bowl.
And all I could think of fitting those parameters was pickle relish.

Oh, I think an olive spoon is far superior to an olive fork! Easier to catch the olive, for one thing. And no holes in the olive.

But it doesn't look like an olive spoon (I sort of had an olive spoon quest a while ago because a fork really DIDn't work for me, so I've seen many types). It looks like you tilt it one way to drain and then the other way to pour out the stuff. The spout allows you to put it where you want it. A precision tool! I could picture applying relish to a hotdog with it. Left-handed people are forced to adapt, of course.

Eggs! Now THAT makes sense given the "Sepelia~Stainless Chromium Plate on Nickel Silver ~ Sheffield, England marking.

Why else would someone plate stainless over silver?

Nickel Silver has no silver in it; it's metal alloy used as a base for plated articles. I'm sure the formula varies but it's similar to German silver (not to be confused with .800 silver from Germany), white metal & Brittania.

Hmmm. Rather than being scoop shaped it's egg shaped. Of course that would depend on what size the bowl is. If it's smaller than the average egg then probably not. That's the problem with photos with no size reference to judge by. I guess the OP will have to let us know. How about it JL?

Umm... here's a pic with a "large size" egg on the spoon. Not so sure that would work, a little wobbly! And a pic with my hand for size reference.

Thanks for all the guesses as to what this weird little spoon might be used for.

It's got a bit of a spout so you can put your whatsit precisely where you want it. Does one ever serve capers as a condiment? I really don't know, but the size is right.
