Growing Tomatoes

Digdirt Dave....a couple of size questions, please.

Actually, anybody is welcome to answer this, but since it's Dave's seeds that I'm growing, he's going to be my final authority!

Are Stupice and Bloody Butcher determinate or indeterminate for you? How large do they get?

Both are listed as indeterminate on the Dave's Garden website, but one poster there says Stupice was recommended to her for growing indoors because of its "dwarf size". Beyond that, I have also seen Bloody Butcher described as determinate, semi-determinate, and indeterminate, depending on the website.

All of this is leaving me confused, semi-baffled, and indecisive.

They are indeterminate in terms of type of growth but the plants are more of a semi-indeterminate size. Depending on how you stake/cage - 5-6' tall. Early, very productive of large plum sized 3-4 oz. fruit in clusters.

The fruit size I was sure about. But then I was also sure that the plants themselves were tall indeterminate, until I noticed the discrepancies in the way the seed sellers described the Bloody Butcher.

I've got a few of the Butcher and the Stupice started, for myself and a couple of friends in the low desert. I also have a Northern Exposure growing and one of the much maligned Early Girls and am getting ready to order some Glacier heirloom seeds next.

I'm looking forward to the taste tests! I'll be sure to report back!

Blue berries work fine in containers. Choose a whiskey half barrel for a long lasting container that has ample room. Blueberries require very acidic soil, more so than just about anything else so build your potting mix out of things like pine bark fines (really small pieces), sphagnum peat moss (very acidic), perlite and maybe a little compost. Fertilize with fertilizer made for acid loving plants like Miracid. Never allow blueberries to have dry soil, they require moisture at all times. Apple trees from seed will take years before they produce anything and if these are seeds from a grocery store apple you probably won't like what you end up with. Most fruit trees are grafted onto another plant's roots rather than their own roots for better hardiness. I would advise purchasing a dwarf apple tree for container growing. Grapes I don't know about in containers, never tried it. Seems doable, but you will require a strong trellis or support of some kind for them to grow on. Watermelon require lots of light and heat to grow well. You would have to have several HID (high intensity discharge) grow lights to grow a watermelon indoors. The plants get huge as well so space would be a problem. Watermelon can do fine in containers outside in the summer though, but they use a lot of water so choose a large container (again, whiskey half barrels are hard to beat for the price).

The money saved using the solar pool cover has more than paid for itself. We usually put it on just before Thanksgiving and take it off late March or early April. I made the mistake of not ordering a clear cover and had to pay shipping on the return. I don't remember the size, but my GH is a 8 x 16 SunCountry and the cover goes up the side and over the top and back down the side again. The front is flush and I wrap the back like a package. I also purchased mine out of Wichita and ordered the gromet (sp) clips from Charley's Greenhouse.

Hi, I'm new on here, But I've been growing Iris for over 12 years I have over 18 Colors. I live in Wyoming and was always taught when splitting them to cut the leaves back to 3 inches, and I'm sorry they stop blooming when they are rhizon bound. You just dig them up in the fall cut em back and replant. If in really bad shape it will take up to 2 years to see blooms again, extra plants can always find a new home. I have a waiting list from my beds. BUT they will all rebloom.

I think the idea of the light and heat were if they hadn't actually started rooting yet. I normally just use a one gallon black plastic pot like plants come in at home depot. The black seems to hold in the heat, which aids in the rooting process. Best size cutting? I've done em from 3 inches to 3 feet. Of course the ones 3 feet need to be braced up and in a larger pot. I think most cuttings such as are on e-bay are in the 14-20 inch range. I use the 50-50 soil mixture of perlite and cactus mix. I also use root tone with a fungicide in it to help in rooting. No water till you get some leaf growth of appox 5-6 inches. I wish you good luck, and hopefully I've assisted in some small way. John

Hi Dave, I was wondering if you could suggest a "determinate" type for kid's garden, you suggested a few before to me, eva purple ball, bloody butcher, that are indeterminate, we would like to try something indeterminate & something determinate as well.....thanks for the suggestion...Florida....

tumblingtomatoes - Lots of determinate suggestions in the discussion just down the page called "a good tasting determinate, anybody know 1?" My personal favorite for my garden is Rutgers (the det. strain) and several recommend Mozark but most any of them will work in Florida as long as they are planted at the right time.

That seems to be what is crucial to success for Florida growers and unfortunately it isn't the same as when most of us plant. ;) Right now thru spring is your best tomato growing time from what I understand from other Florida growers so it will likely all depend on what varieties you can find transplants for. If they offer Bradley, give it a try.

Stupice is definitely not a dwarf.

Tumbling, why not try some of the many dwarf-type varieties in your kids' garden? They are much more kid-friendly. Varieties like New Big Dwarf, Lime green salad or red house free standing to name a few.
