Need Advice on Maytag/Whirlpool/KitchenAid appliances

Hi All - we're building an energy-efficient (Earthcraft certified here in the South) house. My dad retired from Maytag and gets a killer discount (nearly 50%) on appliances through an alumni program. So I am trying to buy things through him and get as many Earth Star rated appliances as possible.

We really want an induction stove. My only options through Dad are the Kitchen Aid 36" or 30" induction cooktop (no freestanding ranges with ovens below). I'm trying to figure out if I can fit a cooktop and separate wall oven (asking folks over in the kitchen forum for help) - but assuming I can, does anyone have experience with the Kitchen Aid cooktop? Should we go with the 36" for the extra burner?

Fridge: we're looking at the Maytag French Door 25' fridge: MFI2569VEM. Anybody have any experience with that?

Wall oven/microwave: I have three options that include induction:

KitchenAidÂ® 30" Built-In Microwave/Oven Combination

2)KitchenAidÂ® 1.4 cu. ft. True Convection Microwave - 3.8 cu. ft. True Convection Lower Oven - ArchitectÂ® Series II

3)Whirlpool GoldÂ® 30 in. Built-In Combination Oven

The price on the first two is about the same. The price on the 3rd is a lot more. So between 1 and 2 -- anybody have an opinion?

I haven't even begun to look at the dishwashers so if you all know a good one in the Maytag family, I'd love to hear it! Or perhaps I should start separate threads for each appliance?

Whirlpool's best DW lines are Whirlpool Gold and Kitchenaid. We have the KA KUDS30IVSS since Oct 2009 and are very happy with it. I did a review on it here which you should be able to find by doing a search on the model #.

BTW, my own practice is to buy extended warranties on anything that involves heat and steam. We've been burned on our gas range by circuit board replacements that have totaled almost the cost of a new stove. Appliances aren't made to last 20 yrs any longer. There are many here who argue against extended warranties, but on certain appliances I think it makes good sense.

That's a great discount and I hope others will chime in to help you with the individual appliance choices.

I have a Kitchenaid about 2 years and it does a really good job and very quietly. Holds a lot including odd shaped & sized things, washes the dirtiest loads clean and best of all it dries things too. The racks are very sturdy, adjust & move easily. The machine has a soft food disposer, so you don't have to worry about the odd pea, bits of rice, kernals of corn, melon seed or other food waste. They are trapped, pulverized and then flushed away. So there is no filter to hand rinse or odors in the machine. The instructions recommend Cascade or Electrasol detergents and keeping the rinse aid dispenser topped off. Following this advice, everything has worked well. C

We just built a second home and I spent many hours reading about and looking at all of the more moderately priced gas ranges. I have a 48" Dacor that we've had to 12 years - love it - but bought a Frigidaire gas range for the cottage and it is surprisingly good. The burners are in a couple of different sizes - one small and one for a quick boil - there is an oval burner for a griddle in the middle. The oven heats really fast and no trouble at all baking. The racks don't feel as sturdy as the Dacor, and it seems a little bit less insulated, but all in all for a range under $100 I think it is a winner ! Frigidaire had consistently good reviews on their gas ranges.

My kitchen had all Frigidaire Gallery Professional appliances. They were installed in 2000, by the house's previous owner. The refrigerator died in 2012 (12 years life), I forget what the problem was but some fluid was pooling under the unit and the repairman said it couldn't be fixed (part not available). The range died this month (16 years) and it will cost $600 to fix the multiple problems, including circuit board, temperature sensors, and LCD display (but the burner that won't self-light cannot be fixed, part NLA). The dishwasher still works, but the door cladding has come off its frame a few times, the springs that lower the door have broken, the lower rack is missing half its wheels, so we'll replace it next year (17 years). I'm not sure if 12-16 years is generally considered a good service life for modern appliances, but I don't think it is acceptable. I replaced the refrigerator with a commercial True T49. We just ordered a new range, an American Range ARROB636. Now I'm shopping for dishwashers. In general, I'm looking for the simplest models with as few electronics as possible.

Hi simmtalker, I have the Maytag MBF2258DEM which I think is the same (at least looks the exact same) as the model you are considering. I love this refrigerator and have had zero problems with it in the 4 years I have owned it so far. I had to work with size constraints as well--but I am so glad I went with the single door vs French door. I agree with you, however, that refrigerator drawer quality for this model is obnoxious. But the drawers have not broken down at all for me either--though I was definitely expecting them to. No too warm or too cold spots. Door holds ALOT. Also, I love the ice "bucket" in the freezer so much more than an ice dispenser through the door. It is easy to clean; and easy to remove for parties or large quantity ice dispensing. Lighting for upper "fridge" portion is lovely. Honestly--the reviews are what led me to this refrigerator--and now I am raving along with the rest of them :) Let me know if you have other questions.
