Under counter microwaves
Comments (2)We just installed a Thermador MCES in our island. For us it was the only place to put it, and I wanted a smaller micro/convection oven to go with my cavernous range oven. A few things to consider. In convection mode, the exterior (and I'm assuming you'll use a trim kit for addt'l ventilation), the exterior can get pretty hot if you are running it at 450. Probably not a wise idea if you have small children. If you do have children, and they are only using the microwave feature, having it closer to their size may be preferable to adult eye level, or counter-top applications. After years of eye level microwaves, it does take some getting used to for the "bend and nuke" usage. On the upside, having a smaller oven cavity is ideal for smaller items (I baked a couple of potatoes earlier in the week) and was glad I didn't need to fire up a 5.7 cu foot oven for the task....See MoreMicrowave under the counter
Comments (22)You're right about Sharp, Taggie. And yet another example of the fact that a huge majority of appliance sales people aren't to be relied upon for accuracy. Sharp makes ALL MW drawers. Those sold by others are simply re-badged and have a large markup to go with it. I trust what I read here from actual users who aren't working on a manufacturer kickback of the month, like sales people, for my appliance info. I've melted butter beyond the melt stage to explosion more than a few times in my drawer. I've also exploded a couple of other messes. Its really not that hard to clean. Wipe up the sides and bottom, then lean down and look up. You can see almost all the roof like that. And if you don't want to lean, wipe methodically back and forth blindly, working your way front to back. That works also. Mine has been in use (and misuse) for 14 months now. No smells. No issue. It looks as good today as the day I bought it. I'm VERY happy with it....See Moreunder cab microwave dilemma--still and again
Comments (10)I'm not a big proponent for building in such a "disposable" appliance. MWs of today aren't the tank like build of the old Amana Radarrange that were the size of a large hope chest! Even spendy MW's break, and then, if you've built it in, you're imprisoned to a very select set of expensive replacement models. And, since they don't make "paneled" MWs, and none of them are all that attractive, the less "bulk" with the trim kit etc. that they have, the less obvious they are. I much prefer a shelf on which to place a $79 throwaway MW, and when it dies, to replace it with another one that probably costs $59 at that point in time. You only need an inch or two clearance around most MWs, and if the non built in look really bothers you, you can get pocket doors that either slide back along the sides or lift up and in to reveal the MW when in use....See MoreMicrowave under counter
Comments (36)If you are set on having an under counter microwave oven.... I have a combi oven/microwave by Miele. (speed oven) The touch pad is on the top and the oven door pulls down. It is designed to be installed under counter as an option. They cost slightly more than a microwave drawer and have way more options than a drawer. They are usually 240V oven that can be used as a full second oven. Mine has a broiler. I bake and roast in these. These are very common in Europe. Many European kitchens will have just one oven: a speed oven... The brands that you will find are European models. https://www.ajmadison.com/b.php/Speed+Oven%3BWall+Ovens/N~30+4294836990 If you get the 240V model, you will have to rewire the kitchen for it. My second home has a standard American type Microwave oven installed under counter. (I think Sharp) The touch pad is to one side and the door swings open. I would say that having the control pad on the top is easier. It has a trim kit. Even so, I use it just fine. Again, if you are considering a drawer, spend a little more and get a speed oven instead....See Morefenworth
