Triple Crown Blackberries - trellising and care
Comments (28)Hi. Not sure if this thread is still active, but it's been very helpful to read all of the advice/comments. We have a few questions that we are still looking for feedback on. We live in central MN and planted Triple Crowns and Arapahos 3 years ago. Last summer was our first big crop and we had a great yield. We cut back all of the floricanes last fall. This summer we had basically no berries (a couple random clusters - maybe 12 berries total). It was a huge disappointment, but mostly we were just confused about what we could have done wrong. We did have a difficult winter, so maybe that contributed? Plants were slow to grow, at one point we thought they had died. Eventually they took off growing again - just no fruit. Now, it is October. We are left with tons of green growth - canes up to 20 ft long. We are hesitant to prune anything and risk another season with little to no fruit. We are also unsure of when/how to prune/head back the primocanes. In the past, we just let them grow and wove them into our trellis system. We would like to try keeping them more under control and encourage more lateral growth. Should we still get some pruning in this fall? Is it ok to cut a 20 ft cane back to 6 ft (or does that "heading off" need to be done throughout the summer)? Any advice is welcome and appreciated! Thanks...See MoreOur trip across the pond
Comments (23)Rosewitch, England was definitely one of my favorite places I have ever visited. My folks took me there when I was 14, and I remember bits and pieces the Crown jewels, walking amongst the Stonehenge stones (roped off now, vandalism), Stratford upon Avon. Time for me to take my own 14YO. Im trying to think how I can get over there for a whole summer, LOL. Dlynn, I could have worked so much more. I didnt really look at night time stuff and there was loads to do. Greece: cant help you, but shoot Yasou a line, she went a few years ago. LOL Annie! Teresa, well go together. I wanted to explore more cooking and food shops/stores but didnt get to. Terri, here is more a link to Pictures of England, a website pointed out to me by Denise. I started it on Bourton on the Water, where we stayed for a few days. Thanks Sharon, I was actually thinking how can I even come close to posting her quality of travel guides, I dont do the pictures she does LOL. We might have sat at the same table in the Cheshire Cheeses dining room! Sawdust still there, but we didnt make it to the cellar. I missed a lot of the British Museum. It has changed.check out the new atrium. I couldnt keep up with DH and DS16. Afternoons, when I planned museums, I crashed. Next time! Pam, lots of people did more than we did per day! Theater every night, more attractions, I cant imagine. Gina heh heh yeah I need another vacation like a hole in my head. Speaking of whichDH has another week off in August. Nooooooooo! Kathleen, DH says he took an average of 200 pictures a day. Yup. Me, I just buy the post cards or Google the images, same thing (DARFC from the photo bugs here) Cathy, thanks for giving me the War and Peace moniker heh heh. Next time I go with CF friends! LindaC, I know. Im still exhausted. Speaking of the V&A, did you know there was a Dale Chihuly chandelier in the entrance room?...See MoreStars and Crowns!
Comments (4)Yes, Sue, they do. If you have a kitchen supply store nearby they would probably have it. There are lots of sites if you Google "parchment paper". I keep thinking I'm going to get some, but I need to use up whaat I already have first. I always bake a full batch of cookies with the same parchment paper. I usually have two cookie sheets going--one in the oven and one ready to go when the first one comes out. Those cookies will be so cute. And much neater than cake--or are you doing both? No baking here today!...See MoreNeed online source of wall hanging plates in green color
Comments (5)The most popular maker of these plates is Bordallo, in Portugal. If you go to ebay, and seach for "green Bordallo plates" you will find a lot of them, in all sizes. The size you want is usually labeled "dessert plate" or "salad plate." There are also Chinese knockoffs that are just as good, and antique majolica plates that cost a fortune. Last week I found two green majolica dessert plates at Goodwill. They were 99 cents apiece. Score!...See Morelindac
