Please ID this turtle

I found this little guy in a pan of water I keep for the chickens. I was going to rinse it out and re-fill when I discovered this little guy swimming around. Not knowing anything about turtles, I didn't know if he wanted out of the pan or not so I put a rock in with him to climb on. I picked him up with a flat piece of wood so I could take a few pics for ID'ing. He is about 2.5 or 3" long including his tail (which is very long). Here they are, can anyone tell me what he is and if he would be happier in the pond around the corner from me. Thanks.

Thats an eastern mud turtle (Kinosternon subrubrum). They are actually rather terrestrial and will frequently move on land, which is why he probably found your pond. ~Mike

Looks like a wood turtle. Protected in many parts of it's range. Local DNR might even want to study that nest.Hope the nest does well!

That looks like one of those little dime-store 'pet' turtles that parents turn loose into a local stream or lake after the kids get tired of feeding them. They used to cost 10 cents when I was a kid, but I think they cost a lot more now.

Perhaps I should have given more info in my first note. I only had them in the 'tub' so they cound go outside for some sunshine. It is not where I keep them. When I feel they are large enough to be released back to the wild I will do so. I have a family of racoons not to mention birds and snakes who like to dine on newborn turtles and I will do my best to give these babies a chance to live. I just wanted to know what they are since I want to give them the conditions they require.

So what should I do with him now.....he can't live in this little pan, it's only about 3 inches deep. Will he survive if I put him in the pond around the corner, it's an old cranberry bog that is pretty big. When do they get aggressive. He did not even try and grab the small reed I put near his mouth to see if he would grab on. How old do you think he is?

Put him by the pond so he can find food.

It's this year's hatchling. Probably less than a month old. Putting him in the pond is the best thing for him.
