OK, this morning I see that BOTH sides of the garden are illuminated by dappled sunshine in the early a.m., but that the left side has the dappling persisting much longer due to the angle of the sun coming through the pin oak tree. So that is why I think I should put the STGN on the left side of the garden, right off of the sidewalk leading to the building. I thought that the corner of the raised bed containing 2 rose bushes, which is a few feet from the porch, would be a good place because then it would have the rose bushes in front of it and the Obligatory Bushes to its right, giving it some sun protection on 2 sides in the morning, while the shadow from the building completely covers that spot by 3 p.m.

Thanks, ritaweeda, my comment was tongue in cheek overdrive, but while generally not a germ-a-phobe, I truly dislike being sick with a cold or flu. As a nice favor to friends, I used to babysit their young kiddies for free when they had to go for a daylong class, or the daycare was closed. Too often. I sometimes had four colds a season. I no longer spend time with kids, but the advantage is, I don’t tend to catch colds, except last year, when shopping, a woman with whom I was speaking (no contact and I was 3-4 feet away) turned her head to cough, the informed me she’d been battling a bad cold. Gee, thanks. After about 2 to three days My throat began to itch and feel sore, the next day fatigue, sore throat, rhinitis. Grrr. And, definitely yes yes, it was that woman’s cold. I was sick for three weeks. And I had a lot of work to do. Bah! I’m afraid I would be a grumpy toad if I had been in that sneezy cough waiting room. “Look here, you imbeciles!” Ever go into the lav of one of those big store and see the many messy toilets? Flushing and tidying up seems beyond some users. :-/ Not everyone is going to score over 90 on an IQ test, or be able to follow the directions for making a peanut butter sandwich. I use Alcohol-based hand cleaner, avoid public knobs and handles, and avoid the cold air blow-dryer at Lowe’s, MacDonald’s and some other public places. They just push atomized cold bathroom air onto one’s clean hands. Blech. Best, Grumpy

I'm not sure about growing a persimmon tree in a barrel unless you are trying to stunt the tree. You did say yours was a dwarf variety, but did not say what its adult size would be. I am familiar with regular persimmon trees. When I was a kid, I ate persimmons from our neighbor's trees. They did not harvest any and invited friends to take the fruit. They had a grove of 5 trees. A natural persimmon is a tree and has a growth habit similar to a smaller maple. The trunk is usually straight. The tree will attain a height of 40 ft. I don't know if there are male and female trees, but likely you'll have more success of setting fruit if you have 2 or more trees for cross-pollination. The fruit does not ripen until fall as its leaves begins to shed. Its a surprise if you try to munch on an unripened persimmon for it is loaded with 'pucker juice'. I believe its is alum. After biting into an unripened persimmon, your lips will pucker and you can whistle for a several minutes. As a prank, farm kids would try to get an unsuspecting person to eat a green persimmon.
