Snake Road: Has it been cold enough?

Since I've only been there once during the fall, I was wondering if you some of you with more experience at Snake Road might know whether or not the temperatures have been cold enough down there lately to have triggered the migration. Or at least by this weekend.

I know up here in Indiana it hasnt been very cold at all during the nights. Maybe upper 50's, and we're quite a bit more north than s. Illinois.

If it hasnt been cold enough, I may put off my trip a week or two.

It's a good question. My experience has been that temperatures matter more in the spring for when they finally stop basking outside their dens and move to the flats than they matter in the fall. It seems to me that they migrate in the fall by some sense related to time of year (length of day or something) than the temps per se. The main exception being that if they get really crappy weather for a day or two they might seek temporary shelter in a log or hole or under a rock and thus be slowed a little.

It has been very warm here, but my thought is some of the snakes will still be moving next weekend. But October 8th might be the ideal weekend.

I don't have a choice because I am working around others schedules so I'm going next weekend. But if I had a choice I might wait a weekend. Then again I'd probably check the extended forecast for Carbondale on Wednesday or Thursday. If it looks like its going to be highs in the 60's and partly cloudy on the weekend I'd go. If it looks like its going to be highs in the 80's (or 50's) I'd stay home and wait a weekend. 70's flip a coin.

Thanks Wayne. I think I may have to wait around until next week because of a late paycheck. I'll probably go down on the 5th (wednesday) and stay until Friday if the weather looks good. Hopefully the weather cooperates. Right now its looking pretty good for this weekend. Well, Friday and Saturday, anyways. Hope you do well...

Nice Pictures! I can answer your question. That black snake is a black rat snake. Was that midland water snake (subspecies of the northern water snake) found at LaRue Road. I have never found a midland water there before. In fact I don't think I know anyone who has seen one there either. I'm sure they have a good population there, but it surprises me that you saw one. They generally inhabit lakes, creeks and rivers. One doesn't usually see a midland or northern water snake in cypress swamp. I have seen them up north in oxbow lakes. I did see a midland water snake at Mingo swamp in a ditch, but that is far as my northern water snake experience goes. Nice find. Ryan

You'll need to find a larger size of perlite (not rocks). I buy size 2 at the organic gardening/hydroponic store here in town. The size two seems big at first but breaks into smaller pieces very easily (dont break it apart on purpose though, you want it in bigger pieces.) Be sure to sift and rinse it, otherwise the dust on it can gather at the bottom of your pot and create a swamp that stays soggy, like sand does. I would like to warn you against purchasing the Miracle Grow brand of perlite. It's like they used all the good pieces and bagged up all the fines to pass off as perlite. It just turns into a mushy, soggy mess unless you sift it and then you can only use ~1/8 of the bag as the rest are fine particles and unusable. Total rip off. As Russ said, you'll need at least 50% of the mix to be perlite (you can use perlite mixed with chicken grit [crushed granite] to make up this half of the mix but the grit can get very heavy if it's a large container) combined with 50% or less of the cacti and succulent mix you buy, if it's based on peat (sphagnum peat or coco peat, which is what most people think of when they think of potting soil, very small organic materials). Little jab: and I thought my pictures were bad! If you're using a phone, you should be able to click on the item you want it to focus on and it'll focus for you.

Refrigerator got suddenly cold..now fridge and freezer not cold enough

UPDATE: Well...I got myself a Rubbermaid coil cleaning brush and pulled the kickplate off the fridge. As anticipated there was enough dog fur clogged underneath to make half a dozen toupees. The coils were way in the back (and hard to reach) but I scrubbed clean what I could and vacuumed up the fur and dust. Only the bottom row of coils was visible so hopefully that is where must of the gunk was. The temp of the fridged seemed to drop almost immediately. I'll keep an eye on it the next few days to make sure it stays steady. Hopefully no more issues will surface. Thanks for the advice folks. Cheers!
