Never get an appraisal from someone who offers to buy what they are appraising.
Look in your phone book for appraisers and call and ask if they are experts in furniture appraisal.
Another way is to take pictures of it and post them here and perhaps we can tell you how to describe it when you go looking for an appraisal.

Yes, appraisers charge for their time.

Do NOT use an appraiser who charges a percentage of the appraised price. They have a reason to give high appraisals.

If you can take some mpictures of it and post them, we can give you an idea of what you have - age and name of style - so you can start knowing something.

And where do you live: it matters for selling furniture.

Hello lazygardens. I have the same problem as the one described above. I have a complete bedroom at my home and as I know it is more than 100 years old but I do not know the value of it. Someone has told me that is Victorian from mid-late 1800s. The thing is that I don't know anything about it and I would like to have an ideea about how much it costs too. Maybe you can help me please. Thank you.

It depends on condition, and the local market, and the current fads.

Check local antique shops for similar furniture.

The thing is that I live in Romania, and local antique shops tend to cheat people by underevaluating and underpaying for an item and that is why I thought about seeking help from someone else. I have some pictures with it and if you would like to take a look at it then I will find a host somewhere for you to see them(maybe you have a sugestion about a website or something where I can post them). I am not interested only for the price... I would like to know what kind it is(style) and about what year... things like that. Thank you so far. Let me know if you want to see the pics.

You go to antiques shops to look at what such items are selling for....not what they will pay you for your things. They will pay you about 1/2 of what they can sell it for....they buy whole sale from you and make their profit form the mark up.
That is a wonderful set! You are right, Victorian from the mid 19th century....very Germanic in style, very European.
In this country, in perhaps California, that would bring well more than $25,000....perhaps more than $75,000.
But I have no idea what the market for that sort of thing would be in Romania....but it is very very nice!

Thank you very very much for the comments. I was really delighted to see a reply especially with what is in it(I mean how much it is worth). So you mean that in America I would get for sure more than 25,000 USD for that? Maybe even 75,000 USD??? That is great news! Thank you very much for the info! The thing is that I have more furniture at home but I don't have pictures with the rest of them. What I talk about is one very big thing, but I don't know how you call it in english(down it is like a closet with two doors and it has marble on it like the pic that I posted up there but from there on it is continued with something else on the top of the marble... I don't know if you understood anything from what I said :) ). Besides this thing, I have two more big closets similar to the ones from the pictures and one oval table with 4 leather chairs. If you want to then I could take some pictures because I will go home in the weekend and post those too Sunday after I will get back. Maybe you could give an oppinion about those too. I am not sure why you want to know what the things you have would be valued at in the US....But it can vary hugely from area to area....
I did a short search on the internet for sets similar to yours that are for sale.....and found none.

My interest isn't to sell this necesarly in my area and that is why I looked over the internet to see more opinions about it. You know how it is... if someone likes it then that someone will buy it, and the things like distance, transportation and stuff like this will become small details after a good deal. Anyway, I will go home and take somoe pics with the other pieces that I have and post them too. Who knows... maybe someone will get interested about it:). By the way... do you have any ideea about how to be able to sell this overseas... I mean sites(like ebay), forums. The worst thing is, and that is why I started this discussion, that I have no ideea about the price of it. I mean if you would have this then how much would you ask for it(let's say in the US)? What do you think, an online auction would be the best thing to do? I am kind of sceptical about ebay because I have looked over the antiques from there and there were not too many bids on them, or none. And I don't know about what starting price should I put there either and that is why I asked you about other sites or forums. Selling on eBay only works if you can sell to nearby persons, or if you have something REALLY good that is worth the shipping. That set could pull some bids if you are willing to sell it reasonably (what goes for $25,000 in California has to be IN California, in superb condition, not in Romania).

The reason the local dealetrs pay so little is that they have to pay to ship it to where they can sell it for more money ... if you check into what it costs to ship that set, and get the customs clearances and everything, it's not cheap to get it out of Romania.

Maybe you are right about eBay, but I could try to sell it in Europe, not necessarly in the US. Maybe you could give me some more info with some websites or forums like ebay, or not necessarly like that?
The thing is that I wanted to make an ideea about the price and age wich I did(thanks to you guys) and about selling it I don't want it now, maybe in a year maybe in 6 months(maybe now if I have a buyer) but I was courious about some specialists opinion. About the condidtion of it, I might say that it is very good(it is not scratched, it has no holes in it, no nails and stuff like that).
About the local dealers... it is more than just they want to make a little profit and to pay for the shipment... it is much more. After the comunist era ended here in 1989 many people realised that they can GET RICH(not just getting a profit) by fooling people who had antiques by paying them miserable prices for the items and selling them for 10 times more or even 100 times more. People were not aware about what selling value that item has and they sold it sometimes just because they needed space(for almost nothing). After a while the people started to realise the value of the items that they have but in some cases it was too late. So the dealers from now, remained with the same thinking and they ALWAYS try to fool you.
Today I will go home and take some pics with the other stuff that I have and I will post them on Sunday, maybe you will take a look at those too and tell me a few things about it. Thanks for all the info. Bye for now.
