long baby snake in tree

I live in Ct. Every bird a chicadee, titmouse, woodpecker, winter wren you name it were screaming at something in the apple tree which has holes (hiding places as parts are dead) anyway I was under all these birds trying to figure out the problem they would not budge. SO I kept trying to look where they were looking and eventually I saw a baby brown snake with little squares on it. He matched the tree. It had no yellow on it just brown with little squares. He squirmed into a dead hole. Could it have been a timber rattlesnake? Or a garter. Would birds go crazy like that ? or did they know something ? I have tried looking at pictures I come up maybe a baby timber or garter but not sure. Timber is all brown which this was with darker brown squares. Garter I thought has a yellow stripe or not if its a baby. Have never seen birds go so nuts?
