identifying eggs found in the rock garden

I hope I'm posting this in the right place... yesterday I found four seperate clutches of eggs in my rock garden... one clutch has 6 eggs in it the others just two eggs each... the eggs are VERY soft I assume that they will harden with time most of them are about the size of a quarter & a whiteish, gray color, but three of them are much larger & pinkish color, they were all buried about an inch deep... there are no tracks or burrows around the garden or in the yard... we havent seen any snakes or lizards... I'm hopping that someone might have an idea as to how to identfy what kind of eggs they are... I do have pics if that will help... if you have any ideas PLEASE let me know... thanks!!!

Lizards tend to lay round or slightly oblong eggs. Many of the geckos and skinks lay 2 at a time. Larger lizard species will produce larger clutches. Sometimes several female lizards will lay in the same spot if ideal nesting sites are limited. Your clutch of six larger eggs is most likely from one female but not necessarily.
Snakes usually lay several or more eggs in a clutch and they tend to be much more elongated than lizard eggs. All snake eggs and many lizard eggs remain soft and leathery. You can check online to see which species live near you and make an educated guess.

Hi all: I made an executive decision over the weekend regarding the rock areas and hopefully it is going to work out - I am tearing out the landscape fabric under the rocks so that nature can do the job she does so well, break down debris. The landscape fabric has not detered the weeds from growing right through, and literally tearing holes by some of the bigger weeds. We have so many ants of different kinds here that make nests and collect seeds from the desert floor. Until the first rains hit there is no guessing where the weeds may be concentrated. The point though, the landscape fabric is not functioning as it is supposed to, so away with it! I am putting down preemergent in the rock areas, along with ant repellant and I think I will have a fine rock area. The plants may even do better as the ground may dry a bit and I should not have the issue of plants rotting from too damp earth. I think that this has been a learning experience as you said Krensgarden. So I will live with this for the growing season and fall and then make a judgement. A note of caution to gardeners who may be putting together a rock area that also is subject to garden debris blowing around it, don't put down landscape fabric!

i use stone in alot of different ways in my gardens. they are all lined with local field stone. i also put alot of it in the gardens. i try to get my plants and shrubs to grow over the edges to break them up. i do line my gardens with a weed barrier before i mulch. i also spray the rock borders with roundup 2 times a year. i try to keep mine looking natural. i have seen many rock borders that look awkward, especially when the garden doesnt have any stone in it other than the border. i can understand botann's opinion cause i know he bases it on his strict japanese gardening rules.

Not eggs. A fungus-like organism "feeding" on the dead organic matter. Won't damage man, beast, or living plants.

lol. Ken, you're funny! I admit, I was just being silly but surely you agree that it's quite gross looking. I'm not SKEERED of it. If I twas, I wouldn't have yanked it out of the ground. =) My husband tells me all the time to quit chasing snakes to get pics of them. ;-) We've only lived in this house for a year and it's the second one I've noticed. No trees above the area at all; however, we do have oaks on our property, just not in this location. I've never seen anything like it before in all my years of gardening. And there's certainly no chance of me eating it! BLECH!! Thanks for your humor! =D
