I'm not sure if this is where I can post a related question... I live in SW Missouri and was hoeing some weeds beside my house and accidentally chopped a small snake in two. I've identified it as a Midland Brown Snake. I noticed the mortally injured snake, though only 7 or 8 inches long, had babies wriggling out of its belly. So I pulled all of them out and carefully placed them into a jar. There are about a dozen that are still alive. I've had them about 3 hours now. Any suggestions on what to feed them? They're about the size of a toothpick and I can't imagine they could feed themselves on their own. I'm wondering if earthworms cut into tiny pieces would work for them...

It is called a Dekay's snake(Storeia dekayi) non venomous and adults get to about 6-8 inches long. Eats Insects and best of all, it also eats grubs.

It's a baby Black Rat Snake(Pantherophis obsoletta), a very common species in Virginia. Most people, I guess, expect the babies to be black like adults are in this region, but that isn't the case. This one is very typical of a hatchling Black Rat.

Probably an Eastern Garter Snake ... their color varies wildly, but the black head and stripes along the body with sort of "checkerboard" patterns between the stripes is one variant. They are not venomous, but they will bite and also release a VERY SMELLY fluid if you handle them. http://www.paherps.com/herps/snakes/garter_snake/

THANKS, it is so nice to have people at this site who can id snakes. I didn't think it was a cotton mouth but then they can be such different colors at different ages and stages of their life. I do see them swimming out in the big pond. I have read they are the olny ones who swim on top of the water, and that water snakes do not. The only thing I know for sure about them is the black line that appears to go through their eye.
Is there a site out there that clearly shows all the different 'appearances' of these snakes? I really need to learn since I have created a wildlife friendly yard. Thanks again
