hooks: Try using plain rubbing alcohol (or 409 or Fantastik, or their generic equivalent) on the plant (Spritz it on the leaves and stems). Make sure to water the plant thoroughly as the treatment is slightly drying to the plant, (and thoroughly drying to many insects). It works on ants, and spider mites, mealy bugs etc - so it may work on spiders too. Most 'bug sprays' available for home use are made using pyrethrins - which occur in, or are derived from chemicals that occur in, chrysanthemums, and do not contain active 'heavy chemicals' per se [by which I'm assuming that you mean they are made somehow only from a barrel of 'heavy' crude oil]. Please check out the article on natural carcinogens you are exposed to in a holiday dinner below. The main point is: just because it's manmade doesn't mean it's toxic, and just because it's natural doesn't mean it's safe. Here is a link that might be useful: Carcinogens in a Holiday Dinner

I looked up Canna ( I am new to gardening) and they are very pretty, I think I will have to get some! I looking for more tropical plants to fill in the are that already have the Bird of Paradise and I think the Canna would be a good fit.

You're lucky - I have always wanted to see one of them, but have never had the opportunity. Check the link below for info on the Bolas spider in CA. Tucker Here is a link that might be useful: Bolas Spider

at a 1.48 each.. its probably not worth the gas back to return them ... back in the day .. i learned more winging it.. like you did ... than i ever did from a book ... no WWW to chicken little me into action ... lol ... they are perennials ... there is no reason they should not come back ... its also hail storm season .. and if you read forums.. you will find many peeps moaning that mother nature did the same as you did ... it might not be a bad idea.. to isolate them somewhere ... treat them ... and plant in fall .. as a newb.. lets be clear... just about everywhere.. but maybe the PNW ... july/august is not a great time to be planting ... yes it can be done ... but dont be surprised if they struggle or fail .. it took me about 20 years in the garden to realize... just because i bought it.. doesnt mean its the right planting season ... and if you dont have 20 to 100 pots for fall planting.. you arent trying very hard... lol ... moving and planting perennials... is done in spring and fall .. for the EASIEST time ... as your experience grows ... you can wing it more... mostly because if you lose them. you shrug and say oh well ... live and learn ... try not to panic in the garden.. it kinda defeats the whole purpose of meditating in the garden .... ken
