How can I lure a lizard out from under the stove?

Hi all,

I have had a lizard hiding under my stove since yesterday. I was afraid I'd cook him with the oven last night. I am squeemish and am afraid he'll surprise me when I'm not expecting it and I'll burn myself or something.

I googled how to get a lizard out of the house and found a somewhat disturbing answer online. Maybe it's just me, but is this a little over the top? Read on:

As a long time Wildlife Rescue Agent I can tell you that the best and easiest way to capture and get rid of lizards as you describe is to use 'glue boards'. Get a couple of them at W-Mart or some other hardware store and place them where you have seen the lizard...or in an area it will go to that is warm like under the stove or fridge. When you catch a lizard on it, just throw it away. Glue boards work for snakes and mice too.

Ok, it's me again. Can anyone offer a more humane solution?

susan- glue boards make me sick. i'm glad you won't be following that advice. i am assuming it was thought by the "rescue" agent that you were willing to kill the lizard after it got its feet stuck. "throw it away" is even worse!

maybe robert from cardonaranch will chime in with an idea. he feeds his yard lizards mealworms he gets from a big pet store. i wonder if you could make a trail of them right out the door or tie a nice wiggly one on a thread and lead your lizard out the door. (:

i don't think it could get into your oven with the door closed. you could always check inside before you turn on the heat. good luck! min

min, thanks, I hadn't thought of the meal worm idea. It is way at the back of the stove now, and doesn't seem to want to come forward like it was yesterday. The lizards in my area are mostly Blue Belly and Alligators, and my son, who is the only one to see it in the middle of the kitchen before it ran under the stove, says he's almost positive it's an alligator lizard.

and no way I'm going to use the glue board, I can't believe it was casually advised by a "rescue" person...sheesh, I'm just trying to get it back outside.

If Robert can think of anything else, that would be great.

You say it works "sort of" -- I'd start with the truth and go from there! When you burn every dinner, suspicion falls on the cook. But what if your best efforts simply fail to produce an edible dinner? I used to have a 1940ish electric Hotpoint which made a noise Â all the time. The oven sometimes failed to preheat, 2 of the 4 burners would not respond to their buttons and the 2 that did had no low, high was the lowest, medium red-hot. The best part had to be the flames that occasionally spurted from the buttons when pushed. Once with 20-some Thanksgiving guests in wait, the oven rack collapsed dislodging the electric element. Still, my DH was unpersuaded that it was "time." My mistake for years was continuing to make that sorry piece of metal look good. What would best motivate your DH? Seeing real-life ruined dinners, trashed pans, wasted ingredients? Reviewing a written log of trashed pans, wasted ingredients, and lost time? If water doesn't boil, dinners are routinely delayed, cookies blacken while still raw in the middle, even non-cooks start to get the message. When he asks about dinner, why not tearfully show him the remains of your efforts in the trash? Or does colorful language better grab his attention? You could cheerfully announce a new winter menu of raw salads and takeout so as not to waste any more hard-earned money on good roasts and hearty casseroles. These luxurious are for those with a working range ..... Like me! We've had our new Blue Star for two years now and my husband still comments at least once a week that he can't believe how consistently great dinners are at our house. (Nothing like a working range & running water, I say, having done without both too long...) If I had stopped covering for that sorry-ash range years earlier, I could have save myself years of culinary grief. (And BTW, my first wish-list stove was far more modest than the one I finally ordered, no discussion, after coming to the end of my rope and letting go!) Truth is, if the furnace or water heater or car broke down, he would "get it" and you would get a reasonable new machine to help the household function again. We can all live without heat, hot water, and wheels just as easily. By which I mean it would be incredibly difficult! People do it, but usually not by choice. If a new stove is what you really need, there's probably a way to bump lesser priorities down the household list so the cook can cook. The person who eats without cooking needs to "get it." If he still sits down to a home-cooked dinner every night, he won't. As you start tonight's salad, start practicing new lines to the Eartha Kitt classic, "Santa Baby," linked. LOL DLD! I used one of those old stove without an electronic ignition at a day camp I ran once. To light the oven you had to light a newspaper roll and hold it in the back of the oven where the pilot was. I can't believe we were using that with kids around, (it was always a fun adventure using that stove). One day while making cookies with her group of campers, a counselor had all the hair burned off her arm. The newspaper roll went up in flames which she dropped on the cement floor of the camp field office and she was stamping up and down to put it out with kids jumping up and down next to her screaming. I happend to be on the phone with the camp secretary at the time and I said, "Sorry I can't hear you too well there's a fire in the field office," to which she replied, "the field office is on fire?" at which point I could hear the director in the next office yelling "WHAT!" He was down at the day camp in a New York minute and I had an electric stove the next day!!

Oh they sneak in here all the time especially from the atrium when I leave the door cracked for my little dog to go out there and sun. The ones here are almost clear they are cute and stay small. They hang out at night under the outside lights to catch the bugs. I have seen some so tiny you could barely see them the size of my little finger nail and at that age they are very clear you can see inside of them. We had the green ones in Oklahoma and the Horney Toads. I love those things I would catch them and lay them on their backs and rub their belly and it hypnotizes them they just go slack and will lay there for hours in la la land. Cats like to chase them and pull their tails off and some cats will eat them too. I have something living in my atrium right now that makes the loudest weird sound, I can't find it though, it is either some kind of frog or lizard or katydid I guess but it scares the heck out of me when it starts that, I can hear it all over the house. I think it must live in my big giant fern or I would be able to see it. I am hoping it is a lizard I don't mind them at all. These are the kind around here that are almost clear they are called (Hemidactylus turcicus). Mediterranean Geckos

Yes, indeed, the stove is on an interior wall. It would be simple if it were on an exterior wall, but a remodel to move it is out of the question. I am very happy with the current placement of all appliances and sink and storage. The stove currently vents down and under the floor out to an exterior wall. I will seriously consider induction, just wish I could get it with down draft. I have checked my pans with a magnet, and not one pan I have works, other than my numerous cast iron pieces. All the comments (especially the links that show the process) give me a lot to think about. I have to keep some kind of exhaust as I occasionally make a batch of lye soap. I hadn't thought about a portable coil for countertop, but it would allow tea brewing in the 2 gallon pot and would accommodate the steel pressure cooker. I am not sure I would trust the large heavy pressure canner on it. I could always visit a friend to can! Guess I would find out who my real friends are.

Hi Susan,

The only thing I would suggest is to back out your oven, ask a neighbor or friend for help. It will try to hide in the corner; you could cover him up with a wash towel then gingerly scoop him up. Take him out side, Viola!
I have a few Pictures of one that comes up to the front door mat and waits of his food, he also has come into the house at times, itÂs funny to watch them try to run on tile flooring

This person is sick. Wonder what PETA or any other Group, organization would say about this so called mush brain of a "long time Wildlife Rescue Agent" thatÂs just flat out cruel.

susan- i'm afraid moving the oven might accidently squash the lizard -though if you really don't want it in there, i guess you have to take the chance. i'm thinking it will have to come out on its own when it has no food and it may already be gone.

they aren't scary really, won't hurt you, and are great for keeping bugs out of your house. in some tropical countries they are allowed to live in houses for just that reason. by the way, they feel cool and dry, not wet and slimy. i raised some of them long ago and they even have personalities!

maybe blowing under the stove with the reverse end of a vacuum cleaner tube would scare it out (if its still there.)

I think the fastest way to evict a lizard from under a stove is to light a fire in the stove. If it s gas stove, you'll have to light the oven as well. If its a wood burner, lighting a fire in the fire box should do the trick.
