Red-tailed Hawk. You don't actually need colour for this one, the pattern of dark belly/pale breast/dark head is sufficient.

I don't have poke that grows at my place but I do have lots of Bittersweet Nightshade (Solanum dulcamara). I remove it from gardens, but I didn't go nuts (as many do) when my kids were tiny trying to nuke it and "protect them" from it. It provided a good teaching tool for berries that look edible but are not. I made sure they knew exactly what it looked like - just seeing it helped reinforce plant safety lessons. Poke can also provide that same learning and teaching experience. FataMorgana

Yes, it is all bark really. The only other bird I thought could be possible was a Carolina Wren but I don't think so. We moved the house today after much though. We were at a loss what to do. The house has broken wood on the bottom, don't know how this happened but it was leaning where it was attached to the pole. I'm afraid it would not have made it safely with the birds inside. So, we made the decision to move the house gently to an area where it will have support, about 10-12 feet directly behind the pole, and pray. We have not gone out there today hoping that with piece and quite momma will not mind the move and brave coming back. We had no clue what else to do and felt this was the safest thing to give them a chance. At first I thought it was kind of silly that this bird was bring mulch into the house until I checked again and noticed the 6 eggs. Hopefully I'll get some pictures.

Hi all, This is an immature hawk (Brown, pale eyes, breast streaking,...) This bird has a buteo shape (large body and head, short tail, and like Elly said, the wing tips reach tip of the tail.) Nathan was right comparing the breast streaking of Cooper with Sharpie, but, what we have here is a buteo not an accipiter. The streaking extends all over the breast and upper breast of that bulky bird, so it is not a Red-tailed Hawk wich show a clear patch on upper breast. The outer feathers of the tail show neat barring, not a faded one like we see on immature Red-tailed or immature Broad-winged (Broad-winged Hawk are still far South anyway). Well it was people that didn't really know any better, but i wanted to be sure since i am doing a presentation on it. How embarrassing would it be to do a presentation on it, and it turns out to be wrong.But wow thanks a lot i really appreciate it. The class is called biology for naturalists, and i really enjoy it. The area i live in is on the St. Lawrence River but specifically in a huge wetland area in Akwesasne, an Indian reservation that straddles the U.S. Canadian border, so i am sure to have many more pictures of better quality to show soon. Again thanks.

Hi ya, Mohawk82. It certainly does look like a red-tail. Lucky you! They are gorgeous creatures.

The class sounds like fun. Hope to get up to Akwesasne soon to find those Mohawk ancestors.
