Help with Raptor ID

I'm relatively new to birding but have always had a deep interest in raptors and owls. At dusk while travelling near a local "swamp" I saw huge bird sitting high up in a tree along the side of the road. At first I thought it was a turkey vulture which would have been ususual. I stopped and walked back towards the tree hoping not to spook the bird who noticed me but showed more interest in the lake than in me or in any of the road traffic. I took some photos quietly with a 400mm lens and it eventually flew off. He/she was much, much larger than any hawk (would dwarf my resident red-tail) with a huge wingspan, and if I were to guess, an immature eagle?

I'd very much appreciate help with an id:
