Are snakes attracted to light at night?

I have a northern water snake in my little puddle/pond that has been there for three years, it's a couple of feet long. When I go out at night with a flashlight and shine the light on it, the snake moves toward the light instead of away from it. In previous years it was pretty skiddish and moved away whenever I approached the pond. My first thought was it was heading to a "hiding spot" where I was standing, but the rocky areas that it prefers are on the other side of the pond. A couple of nights ago, he actually came up on the rock where I was standing, he was not coiled to attack.

So is it attacted to the light? Why else would it approach me?
