Right now I have 2 Bullfrogs in the pond. I have had as many as 5. I do have neighbors with ponds so maybe the others relocated. I also have 2 female red-earred slider turtles and a male. 8 med. Koi, 2 or 2 goldfish and many many Plattys. I find that the Bullfrogs eat the plattys, which is fine as they reproduce like crazy. They have also rid my yard of snails. (I could kiss them for that. And I think that they eat the baby turtles that find their way back to the pond. (I'm ok with that too, circle of life....). I want the California green tree frogs so I put a variety of smaller ponds around the yard. Each male tree frog is territorial for their own. They will mate in a bucket I have found. No one population is getting decimated so I guess a natural balance has been met.

I realize this is an older post but we live on a small farm (we are hay farmers) with creeks, springs, a farm pond and an under-construction koi pond (not yet stocked or ready). I LOVE frogs and toads and we have tree frogs here and I am hoping we will have more frogs and tadpoles when we get our koi pond finished. I picked up a toad the other night and 'petted' him. He curled in a tight, nervous ball and I tried to soothe him and let him go right where I picked him up. Of course, the snakes or various large birds may eat him but I loved him for just a moment!

Call me the mighty cuban tree frog hunter! :o) I saw him hanging out on my yard art and after a few attempts captured him in a cool whip container. He's now chilling out in the freezer. We were able to confirm the big toes. Tomorrow night I'll get a picture and send an email to the University of Florida extension service for mapping. I hope I don't have many more of them.

I think it is perfectly on-topic. Frogs (and toads) are wonderful garden companions and help control the pest population by eating tons of pests. Of course, the downside is that the frogs also might devour some of the beneficial insects too. With rampant flooding all around us, we are getting tons of new wildlife showing up in the yard looking for high ground, food and water. The million frogs that showed up in May laid eggs so we're going to have a billion frogs by the end of the summer. Early in the morning, there's so many frogs in the garden that you have to walk slowly to give them time to jump out of your path. I wish we could train the frogs and toads to sit on top of the porch light and eat all the little pests buzzing around it at night. Like George, I leave little brushy corners (and small flat pans of water in dry years) for the toads. It is impossible to have too many frogs or toads in the garden, except that a lot of snakes come to the garden to eat them, so the population never really gets way out of control.
